My symphony chorus is performing a holiday concert in December, and we’re doing a piece with a flute solo (Simple Gifts). Apparently, I’m one of only two people in the chorus who play the flute, and I don’t think the other person has any interest in playing this solo. I’d LOVE to perform this solo . . . only trouble, I haven’t really played the flute in, oh, about 20 years. (Okay, more like 25). But, the music is fairly simple, except for a few crazy high notes (F# and E an octave above the staff) . . . but, I think that if I work at it, I can pull it off. The emphasis being on “working at it.”
So, for the next 40 days, I’m going to practice every single day. I should have a pretty good idea in a week or two whether or not I can actually get to the point where I could perform this in public. And, of course, my chorus director will have something to say about it, too. :D But I do think it would be a lot of fun to play this solo for our concert. (I just hope it doesn’t mean I won’t be able to get one of the vocal solos - there is one I really REALLY want to sing. Ah well. Things will work out for the best, I’m sure). :)
