So 5 days later the recovery effort is mostly done. There are large holes in some of my stuff, and more corrupted files than I'd care to think about, but it worked. I'm sitting on a pile of files and folders that are unnamed, but I'm fairly certain that I have the things that I wanted to save in there somewhere. The important thing is that I can turn my computer off now.
If anyone was interested in knowing how it happened, my computer lost power while it was doing a system scan at start up. This caused some of the startup files to get corrupted and the only thing to do was reformat and save what I could. I had an external HD but it broke and I couldn't afford a replacement in time for this to happen, so no backups of my stuff.
The small problem with the recovery was that I had to dig through all the little bits and pieces of files that were in my computer (images associated with files, thumbnails, programs, games, ect.) to get the stuff I actually wanted. There are about two or three dozen buttons on my dvd playing program alone and these each have six or seven layers (each layer shows up as a .png or .jpg). Certain things were on my HD twice (because of the reformating) so I had twice as much crap from them. There were even a few files kicking around from when I did this for Rose, but it looks like they're too old to get.
Now it's done, so I'll take some time to clean it up later.
::EDIT:: I need codecs and can't remember what I had before. What are you people using besides Divx?
