Postal Service (not the band)

So apparently. The USPS is looking for a bailout loan and is looking at cost cutting measures such as cutting Saturday deliveries. For some reason this bothered me, though I'm not sure why. OK, just clarified with Dad.

I don't think the USPS is asking for a bail out, what they're actually asking for is relief from the pre-pay requirement. Which I shall now explain: All USPS employees are entitled to same retirement health-care benefits that all US Government employees have. However, the Congress (which controls the USPS through Postal Reform Bills), requires the USPS to pre-pay those benefits for current employees. This is something like $5.4 Billion. This is in addition to another $2.1 billion in health care for current employees.

Because this money (the pre-pay) is covering a government health care plan, it's being paid directly to the US Treasury. It is not going into any sort of bank account or "lock-box." So, all that bailout money the government's been throwing around? some of it came from the Postal Service. So, what the USPS is asking for is relief from the pre-pay requirement.

Oh, and my dad has suggested going to 7-day delivery too, but it hasn't gotten traction.

Anyway, That's how I understand it to have happen, and my dad could have gotten some of the facts wrong, but it's basically as I said, the government is fleecing the postal service for cash.
