A friend and I went to Clothier's Seminar Saturday Feb 4, 2006 in the Society for Creative Anachronism
http://www.sca.org in the local Kingdom of Calontir. My friend Liz had never been to an SCA event as she is a Civil War reenactor and involved heavily in the local theatre up in Maryville Missouri.
We left Friday evening after stopping to eat Chinese food. We giggled like a couple of teenagers over supper and I told her about the antics my husband had been doing over fortune cookies the last time we went out to eat in that restaurant. He had been making "divining" motions over the fortune cookies and kept doing this weird upward swimming action that had me in stitches, so of course Liz was just doubled over laughing her head off when I told her about it, with the appropriate actions of course.
We left town to stay at my friend Hertha's house in Independence before having to go to Wheatridge Middle School in Gardner KS the next morning. I don't get to see Mistress Hertha much these days as she has not been as active as she used to be, though I am her apprentice of some 15 years or more. Of course, I haven't been able to participate much either, what with the shop and these insane rollercoaster gas prices.
On the way to Hertha's we ended up way too far south after stopping for directions at a funky hotel. We got directions mainly to get us out of the area. Then we ended way south of KCMO near Grandview. So we grabbed the atlas and I got us back north up to Independence where we stopped at MO Hwy 40 and Sterling at the Quick Trip on that corner to call Hertha and say "Help get us there. What do we do now?" Shameful of me I know, but I haven't gotten to drive enough in the KC area and I couldn't use my computer to get directions since we had to shut it down all Friday from midnight to midnight.
I had spent most of Thursday saving backup of all my computer files to keep them from possibly being fried by this destructive and purposely malicious Nyxem/Blackworm virus since I was unable to get to the Microsoft Beta site to do the special antivirus scan because probably everyone in the universe must have been trying to do the same thing. So I had no directions and thought I could remember how to get down there like I did this past December. Things did not work out that way and we finally got there about 11PM.
Anyway, Hertha and Liz hit it off just fine as I knew they would, and we watched the latest taped show of "Monk" with Tony Shaloub. He is such a hoot and I have been a big fan of his ever since he first appeared in the movie "Galaxyquest" as the actor/engineer. I had no idea that Hertha and Chiddiock were such fans of the Tv show "Monk".
Well we went to Clothier's and had a ball. We went to various classes that Liz wanted as I wanted to go to everything and didn't know what to pick, so I was happy. When we had the Walk Through History directly after lunch being served in the Common Room, I sat on the floor up front right near Their Royal Majesties and Their Royal Highnesses to get great pictures with my digital camera. Naturally I had to stop people again as they went by to get a close up of some great detail or two. Since I had been overly excited and hadn't slept well, by the time of the Walk, I was just a hair punchy and so I kept finding myself spouting these bizarre yet funny one liners that kept cracking people up including Calontir's Royal Family! One fellow had this wonderful embroidery all over his immensely colorful outfit and he kept doing this belly dancing thing right up in front of the populace and Crown so of couse it was a scream. He had embroidery on his little skullcap so naturally I got the chance to tell him, "Now don't take this the wrong way, but bend over." I wanted to get a closer shot of the embroidery on his hat. I have to admit I was a good girl and managed to restrain myself and did not say, "Now cough!" We did a period hairstyle class, and a shoe making course where naturally there was no way I could ever wear those cool looking pointy shoes, (not enough support for my bad feet) but I struggled to help Liz make herself a pattern. All I managed to do was help Liz draw around her foot and then after that I was so lost in the process.
Hertha had thoughfully provided directions with a few maps from Map Point online going from her house to the site and going from the site back to St. Joseph. Thank God she did as the trip there and home was relatively uneventful, but fun as Liz and I got to visit. We had so much fun. She is such a dear person, but I must say, we have got to build up her self esteem and get her to stop apologizing so constantly.
Liz wants to help me sew curtains for the new shelves up in front of our shop and I am hoping we can do that this coming Monday after I see Grandma. She wants to help and so I will let her! She has a sewing machine and I do not and it would be a great excuse to see Liz again.
All in all we had fun, and I hope to go to another SCA event with Liz again!
I hope I can edit a few pics from Clothier's and post them on MySpace.com. I have pretty much given up learning how to post much more than text and my avatar/icon thingy so I'll just not struggle with it anymore. I have no one to sit down and tell me what to click on which is what I really need. Live Journal is just not as easy to work with as MySpace, so I guess I will just have to be resigned to it even though there is a ton of yucky adware and spyware on MySpace.
