Backlog; On the Dangers of Drinking on the Job

Jun 09, 2008 18:22

You'd think that after all I've been through, all I've learned, that I would know better.  But damnit, I needed the money and -- I can't deny it -- the sex.  It's been a rough couple of weeks.  Neither of my trades have been paying much lately; I simply don't produce the kinds of potions that can make a man rich, and as for the other...

...I'm starting to think I may be getting too old for it.  I'm getting a little tired of having stiff, sore joints four or more days out of the week.

Needless to say, a little distraction and a quick ego-boost were exactly what I was looking for last night.  A bar in Murder Row just wasn't the right place to go looking for it.  Eldride always told me to stick to the streets and the high-end sides of town but, damnit, there are a few faces I just can't afford to see in those parts right now.  I still should have followed the four cardinal rules:

1. Make sure there are witnesses before you leave; they may be needed to identify the body help the local authorities if things go awry.
2. Keep yourself clean.
3. Don't get drunk on the job.
4. Avoid orcs with big hammers Always keep a weapon handy.

...admittedly, one and two aren't applicable in this case.  There were witnesses, and I'm always clean.

Three and four, however, are much more important and not only did I get drunk, I got drunk, threw my dagger at the wall for ether-knows-what reason, and then found a damn client.

Suffice to say, it was shaping up to be a rough night until I shielded myself and jumped out the window.

My ankle still hurts.
