Freedom and Vodka
"Dr. Rockso," Toki said between sips of vodka, "you wear a lots of bright clothing. And you tells all everybody about your problems, like cocaine. You always have to makes a scene."
Rockso nodded slowly, resting his head back against the seat of the car. "That's right."
"I like making scenes too," Toki confessed.
Just so Toki's confession didn't have to have too much weight, Rockso said, "I ka-ka-know you do." He gave him a pat on the arm. A bare, muscled arm rife with youth.
Toki looked at him with a thoughtful partial smile. "We wants something. Wants to belong. Waits for people to likes us."
"It's kind of ha-hopeless, isn't it?"
Toki frowned slightly. "How coulds it be hopeless? It works all de time. People likes us, Dr. Rockso." He gripped the bottle more tightly, tone intensifying. "Don'ts forget that. We're famous."
His companion sighed. "A wise clown once told me, Toki, that Dr. Rockso have to like himself before it can matter. And then he said fame was only good for one thing."
"Oh yeah? And what's dat?"
"People let you off easy."
Toki frowned at that, passing the bottle to Rockso, who took a swig. "But maybe we don'ts always need to be lets off easy."
"That's part of the reason why D-Dr. Rockso does drugs, baby. To make it harder."
Toki scooted closer to him. Rockso looked out at the trees on the side of the road and tried not to notice.
