Memorial Day has now been moved to June 13th.

I've been moving at the speed of molasses at getting my pictures up lately. These days I seem to be as easily distracted as a four-year-old. I took the pictures below on Memorial Day, nearly three weeks ago. But it's all good, I guess.

We decided to spend our Memorial Day seeing the newly refurbished U.S.S. Intrepid, a former aircraft carrier that became a military history museum in 1982 and was fully refurbished just last year.

The entrance of what was an extremely crowded Intrepid Museum is guarded faithfully by a guy who looks an awful lot like the DiNozzo character from TV's NCIS. (I'd rather it be guarded by Abby, the delightful Goth forensic scientist, but I guess you can't have everything.)

How cool is this? In addition to a fictional character from a CBS drama, the lobby of the Intrepid also features really elaborate paper airplanes hanging from the ceiling.

Speaking of CBS dramas, on the "hangar deck" (the main indoor level of the museum) is this very real MASH helicopter.

Great, now I have the M*A*S*H theme stuck in my head.

Ooooh, that's hot.

I wouldn't mind driving one of those...if it didn't have to go in the air.

Damn...that's a LOT of bread.

We then went up to the "flight deck," where the really fun stuff is--the planes and choppers that do the really nasty stuff.

That plane is angry.

That plane is...uh, camouflagey.

That one's just weird. Yellow makes me think of taxicabs, not anything military.

Why does the chopper appear to have an engine that's smaller than the one in my tiny Saturn that barely goes 75 miles per hour? How the heck does it stay in the air? Amazing.

This gives literal meaning to "put a tiger in your tank."

An extra benefit from the $19.50 admission to the Intrepid: A pretty cool view of the Manhattan skyline, from the perspective of the far west side of Midtown (46th Street and 12th Avenue).

I sure hope they remembered to remove that in whatever battle that plane was flown in.

Wow, that is one intimidating front end.

A fighter jet with a color scheme designed by a three-year-old?

The aircraft carrier portion of the Intrepid, which we passed on because of massive crowds. I think it goes without saying that that's not the Love Boat.

Memorial Day (hereby moved to June 13th, on account of my laziness) is the unofficial first day of summer. And of course, it's not a REAL summer day without...

...the Good Humor man! (My apologies to the fine men and women who have far more bravery than I ever will, and serve in the Navy.)
