Summer Farmer’s Markets For Your Pets

One of the great things about this time of year is that the first harvests are coming in and your farmer’s market is filling up with local produce. If you have a parrot or a reptile, this means a great savings on food for your pet. What can you buy?

1. Greens for your lizard. Though with the warm weather, the production of greens, like collard or mustard, tapers off, you can still find them in your garden and at your local farmer’s market. The last of the turnips are appearing, and while you enjoy the turnips, your lizard can eat the greens.

2. Fresh peppers, strawberries, and zucchini for your parrot. I’m starting to see blossoms on my green beans, and little baby peppers on my plants. I can’t wait, and I know my parrots can’t either.

3. Corn on the cob. The first sweet corn harvests are appearing here in Iowa, and I always buy an extra ear. My bearded dragons like it in very limited quantities, and my pionus goes nuts for corn!

4. Who says you have to shop for your pets? Look for fresh tomatoes for BLTs, salsa, or spaghetti sauce for you!

5. Homemade goodies. Many farmer’s markets also have baked goods, pasta, and other local foods. You can buy for you, and your parrots.

Don’t forget, many larger farmer’s markets also have vendors of pet treats or pet goods. So you really can shop for every member of your house at a local farmer’s market today!
