Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend
But I don't know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies...
OOC: Happens sometime after Cody and Hsu return from Paris and after Cody met her mother.
They waited until Hsu was out of town for a day on business to move. Cody Jean was home, alone, watching "Erin Brokovich" on DVD, making turtle cookies, while Eli, the bodyguard of the day, sat in their guard's alcove, reading.
The men coming up the walkway were dressed in dark suits, suits that were far too well made and of good fabric, enough that you had to wonder how a cop could afford it. Eli was instantly suspicious, and he opened the door only a crack. The three men identified themselves, showing badges. One was claiming to be a Zurich detective, the other two were from Paris police.
On the surface, Cody Jean Lane was gracious and serene. She anwered questions calmly, after offering cool drinks, and Eli was dismissed to another room, where, of course, he was contacting Andy MacDonald at the Ranch.
"I am very sorry to inform you, Mademoiselle Lane, but your mother's body was found dumped in the Seine."
Cody didn't flinch, blink or alter her expression in any manner, a control that was worthy of Hsu Danmei, himself. She was calm, as the questions became more probing and far more invasive.
"My mother, gentlemen, was a drug addict. She abandoned me to my grandmother when I was very small. I have only seen her once, last week, in many years. Drug addicts die. It's a reality that their children prepare for every day." Cody's voice was business like, only the slightest bit of accent coming through.
"Mademoiselle, she died from stab wounds from a large blade, such as a sword. Would you happen to have any such weapons in this house?" Eli glanced at her from the hall, and she gave him a hand signal that put him into motion. In a matter of four keystrokes, her computer's link to the Ranch and all files that could be construed as anything relating to Hsu and his life were locked, shut clean and wiped.
"Gentlemen, I have many such things. From kitchen knives to ceremonial swords I bought." Cody sat a bit straighter, as she eyed the three men.
"Why would a young lady such as yourself be buying swords?" The one inspector, the skinny one, stared at her with an intensity that made her think he already knew the answer.
"Renaissance Fairs. I'm such a fangirl." Cody smiled, but it didn't reach all the way to her brown eyes. "Now, if that's all, officers..."
"I'm afraid that we will have to search the premises, Mademoiselle Lane."
"I'm afraid that my attorney..."
"We have a warrant."
Cody stiffly stood, and nodded. "Well, then, be my guest. I have nothing to hide."
Ten minutes later, Cody Jean was being cuffed and placed in the back seat and the two swords in her house were being placed in the trunk of the non-descript sedan. They timed it to perfection, speeding away from her house in exactly the moment that the SUV's rolled up from the bank. Looking out the back window, she tried to smile. Turning back in the seat, she saw the hands of the driver on the wheel. Under the edge of his very expensive Rolex, she saw the faded edges of the familiar tattoo on the man's wrist. The smile froze, and she gave no hint of the deep, certain knowledge that this was the beginning of the end.
