(tentative title, fuck am I tired.)
This is probably going to end up becoming a full fledged AU.
Why?
By the time Naruto is indepent, Itachi would have remembered him. Once you get to know Naruto, you can see what a very gentle and sweet little boy, not to mention charming -_-;, that he is.
Also, after all those years I suspect the Uchiha are used to him and see him as no threat unless he gets under their skin in a major way.
Part of first chapter:
He could hear the screams of frightened ninjas over Kyuubi’s roar. And he focused on the bundle of blanket he was holding, that contained his newborn son, his only child.
“I’m sorry,” Yondaime said.
Two hours later the seal was set, Yondaime was dead, and Uzumaki Naruto was marked for life.
“What do we do with it, now?” Akimichi-san asked, looking down at the baby boy that was in Sandaime’s arms. He was sleeping now, but he had been crying for hours after the seal was set and the ninja had collected their dead and wounded.
“We need to secure his future,” the Hokage said, glancing around at the heads of clans that were around him. Those that had survived or could stand after the attack, that was. “Yondaime trusted that Naruto would be taken care of and we must ensure this.”
The adults in the gathering looked nothing less then then disgusted. “That child is harboring a demon inside him. Why should we have to care for it?” One of the women asked.
Hokage sighed, looking down at the bundle of baby regretfully. “I can not take care of his needs the way one our clan families can. At the present time, he is a normal baby. And, there is always the possibility that if Naruto dies so young and suddenly, Kyuubi will re-appear.”
There was a slight pause after his words, and then Uchiha-san stepped forward, past the other, wary men. “We’ll look after him for the time being.” He said, hands clenched at his sides.
“Thank you, Uchiha-sama.” Hokage handed the baby to the other man, who looked slightly unsettled when the baby turned his face into the warmth. “If you will come with me, we can prepare the necessary things needed for this transition?”
Uchiha followed Sandaime up into his office, which still held the remnants of the Fourth Hokage; his books, his old flak jacket, and a few other personal things.
“Four years,” Hokage-sama said. “That is the minimum time in which Naruto will need someone to look after him. After that, he can survive on his own.”
“Yes, Hokage-sama.” Uchiha’s words were carefully measured and said, and he tried not to let his feelings show through as the child once again tried to burrow closer to him. He couldn’t even make himself pretend this was one of his own children, and could only force himself not to drop the demon child and take back his words.
He owed it to Yondaime. Not only as one of Konoha’s ninja, but as the Captain and the Chief of the Konoha police force. He had to uphold the honor of the Uchiha and show the village that he took his job, his commitment seriously. Even if this was the demon he was holding in his arms. It would be so easy just to . . .
“Uchiha-sama,” the Hokage had an old black bag that Uchiha took silently, shifting the weight of the child to one arm with the ease of practice. “In there, you will find the notes on the sealing process, if you wish to see it, as well as some of their family history. Also, I have included the number to Yondaime’s bank account. I trust you will use it responsibly on Naruto’s needs.”
“Of course, Hokage-sama.”
A while later, he left and walked past the group of clan heads still assembled at the door of Hokage’s home. He ignored them and stared straight past, focusing on nothing in particular and especially not on the baby that had begun to squirm.
Behind him, the Hokage had re-emerged as well. “Now, there are a few things that I must tell you about today’s events.”
