Chillin' & Freezin' in Kobe

Nov 22, 2008 02:50

Kobe is only half an hour from Osaka on the express train and Osaka, Kyoto & Nara forms a triangle, half hour each way.

Most of my time spent in Kobe was trying to dodge indoors because it was damn cold. Out of which the Danish cheesecake at the only cafe serving it wasn't very good. The cheese was pizza mozarella type. The hot cocoa wasn't good either. However the atmosphere was very cosy (hyggelit).

Hiked downwards Mount Rokko (六甲山 Rokko-san). The cable car-ride was good, free and easy and we got the entire cabin to ourselves. It was absolutely freezing cold, lowest temperature -4degrees. Hot chocolate from a vending machine and sitting indoors suits me fine. The hike down was haa...a real hike. Initially was gonna walk through the Rock Garden but that requires another 200¥ (what a rip-off) it was a pay the road toll or take a hike on the path less chosen - and so we did. The pathway downhill while the sun was setting was almost treacherous. Dark and slippery and steep. Should something happen, the phone has no signal and there was no one around.

Thankfully we made it though phew!
It was so strange hiking downhill...everything in darkness, nothingness then suddenly there was a gate. Few km on there was a group of boys playing baseball and then a school. Plus plenty of vending machines the moment humanlife was sighted.

Wanted to try Kobe beef but it was way too pricy, instead discovered the local gyoza small shops were awesome! There was this shop in particular that only served gyoza and beer on the menu. Another served ramen and gyoza on the side.

Stayed at host Terrance's place which as on a hill and required a cab to take us up. The minimum surcharge was 660¥ which is damn pricy! His house is a house so it's huge...funny each place we stayed at simply gets bigger. We got a whole room to ourselves which is always good, however the house was heated by kerosene and it stank of well...kerosene. And we didn't have the heater on all night so I woke up several times in the middle of the night because my face was freezing. I pulled the blankets over my head and then had to peek out every now and then to breathe. So basically I didn't get any sleep for my 2 nights in Kobe. Wished the weather had been heaps warmer.

There is a saying that goes:
Live in Kobe, Go to school in Kyoto and Work in Osaka =)
