So I'm waiting for the light rail yesterday at Cedar-Riverside, just sitting in one of the heat booths, when a guy bikes right up to me, drops his bike on the floor with the rear wheel still spinning. "Hey blue eyes" he says. I can smell alcohol on his breath, and he starts rambling, asking me if he can have my ticket. For about 30 seconds, we back and forth with me explaining he can't have my ticket. I find myself repeating my panhandler line, "Sorry, I can't help you" I'm really quite calm, though I've taken my backpack that was sitting next to me and put it by my feet. He says, crazily, "I mean, I wasn't going to kill you, but I sure was THINKING about it, punching one hand with his fist for emphasis. He's not scaring me, it's broad daylight, and a bunch of people are standing 20 feet away, but this is my cue to leave. I stand up and go stand next to some other people, he protests a little, but wanders off.
I'm almost reluctant to post this because I have some friends who might never ride the light rail again (kidding). But still, being smart is a good plan.
