I confess that may have been a little drunk last night. There were a bunch of people training to be forestry cops over at my place, visiting my roommate. One of them was discussing how she did not feel safe knowing that it is legal for ordinary citizens to own automatic weapons. Something about her sense of privilege bothered me. I don't know if it was the quasi-caste-based notion that police are more competant than ordinary citizens (they aren't), that citizens aren't required to take safety courses (they are, unless maybe you're in kansas), or my inherent dislike of authority (gasp). Anyway, I told them that I felt safer with that knowledge, because this way citizens can shoot cops if they needed to. The room was utterly silent for at least a minute, before the lot of them decided they needed to get up early in the morning and had best turn in. Uncharacteristically rude of me, but well worth it.
