Ok, I just read an article by a woman who was horribly offended by the trailer for the new film "Date Movie", a Scary-Movie-esque parody of romantic comedies. Apparently in it, Allyson Hannigan donns a fat suit and dances up and down a street, to peoples disgust.
The writer, who is overweight, got all up in arms and wrote a crusade of a blog about how hollywood and all people, mostly men, aren't fair to fat women.
Here's my take: Fat is funny. Offended yet? Try this: Mexicans are funny. Black people are funny. White people are the FUNNIEST OF ALL. Short people, tall people, neurotic people, stoic people, old, young... The list goes on. There is a movie out there for every type of ethnic or bodily stereotype. It pisses me off that just because people are insecure about themselves, they feel the need to claim the "unjust comedy" trophy. Granted, sometimes these things can go too far, I'm not saying that calling fat people in general retarded ugly freakazoids is always ok. But to get so riled up over a god damn bridget jones spoof (and come on, it's about damn time) it just ridiculous. I've never heard a "drummers are morons joke" or a "white people are lame" joke or a "Scott you're a tool and no one likes you joke" and gotten upset about it. I LAUGHED. Why? Mostly because it's funny and i, like so many other people of diverse ethicities and backgrounds, have what some call a sense of humor. Hell I've been called fat very often, and i really do feel pudgy a lot of the time, but I DON'T put up a call to arms for all the other pudgy people of the world.
So lady, get off your pedastal. Do something important, like correct the spelling in that last sentence. Go watch SNL or for gods sake even MADtv and watch how they mock tiny kate moss, or clay gayken, or condoleeza rice. You're not alone. Everyone gets mocked, most of us are secure enough in ourselves to laugh it off.
