Music and Magic

A quick note to those who have an interest in connecting music with magic. I've explored the connection a little, but I am more of a visual artist rather than a musician, so my understanding is limited.

There is a book by Joscelyn Godwin, "Music, Mysticism and Magic; A Sourcebook" you might be interested in and really should read. It takes a historical journey through various authorities and approaches, from Plato to the 20th century. It is a fundamental work, a treasure trove.

In Paul Foster Case's "Occult Fundamentals and Spiritual Unfoldment, Vol. 1", pages 59-69, he discusses correspondences for musical notes with color, etc.

Here are some starters for you:

C: red
C-sharp or D-flat: red-orange
D: orange
D-sharp or E-flat: orange-yellow
E: yellow
E-sharp or F: yellow-green
F-sharp or G-flat: green
G: green-blue
G-sharp or A-flat: blue
A: blue-violet
A-sharp or B-flat: violet
B: violet-red

You memorize the note with the color. Case says it is based on physical, sympathetic vibration, on the continuum of wave lengths shared by light and sound:

"1. The sounds and colors to be correlated are physical. They are heard with physical ears and are seen with physical eyes.
2. The relation between them is not symbolic, but actual, and it is not based on clairvoyance, or any other kind of psychic impression. It is a physical fact.

The simple fact is this: The wavelength of Middle C (at 256 vibrations per second) is 1.344 millimeters. Raised to its 29th power, this is the wavelength of the color-vibration red." (p. 61)

And you can work out further correspondences from there if so desired.
