The Need for Cold

Nov 28, 2010 07:39

Watching the snow melt yesterday, and anticipating new snow. We need cold -yes COLD- because we need mountain snowpack to last into next summer, or the rivers die and the fish with them. As David James Duncan said: "...The trout that was the mayfly that was the river that was the creeks that was last year's snowpack that was last year's skies."

Cold purifies the land too. It helps clean the rot, the sickness, the weakness. The Coldmaker and the Summerman advance and retreat in endless cycle. The Cold reminds us we do not live forever, but after Cold there is Spring, and after Death there is new Life. Sprouting, awakening.

Without cold there is no snowpack.
Cold kills the pinebeetles which kill the trees.
Without trees and shade there is no snowpack.
Without the snowpack there is no summer water for the trout or for the fisherman or the ranch or the farm or the faucet.
Do not revile the cold for it is year round water and water is life.
It is all connected.

Do we continue? Does the Mayfly continue as Trout? Does Trout know it was once Mayfly?
My ancestors were Bears who became Human. Every once in a while, Bear emerges from my skin like a Mayfly from the river.
Do we continue on? Yes. Do we continue on as what we think we are?
This is a Mystery none can answer it seems, but we all will join it someday.
