One of my favourite people in the world died last week. Jim, you filled a young girl's imagination with your vibrant stories of all the places you lived and people you met-- you made me realize the world outside our little corner of Florida was vast, rich, and well worth exploring. From day one, you made me feel like more than just a child; you made me feel like a person whose opinion was valuable and well worth listening to. I'll miss the way you laughed and even more the way you made everyone else laugh. You had a knack for finding the absurdity in life, whether it was in politics or culture or your own self.
I feel so lucky to have gotten the chance to know you and to have had as many wonderful memories of you as I do: humid summer evenings spent on the back porch debating politics late into the night, wandering through the banyan-filled streets of South Florida, coffee and crossword puzzles. You made the world a delight.
If you could see me now or read this, I think you'd think it was all ridiculous. I think you'd recommend me a glass of red wine and make some self-deprecating remark that would have me giggling in no time. But instead it's just me and my love and my grief, and all I can think is how much emptier this world is without you in it.
