I went to the police station to file a report for my missing items. Since my items were most likely thrown away then stolen, the police said it wouldn't make sense to file a report because they would investigate for stolen items and hopefully make an arrest. I told them they could arrest my apartment complex office manager if they liked. At least he had a sense of humour.
I did, however, get some good information. I was told that I could do something called mediation if the apartment complex and I could not come to an agreement. He said it was free to me and it was something I could do to get reimbursed. He also told me that if that didn't work because the apartment complex is not bound by law to show up that I could take them to small claims court.
He was very helpful and went to get me the pamphlet for the mediation process. When he came back, he continued to tell me that I should make records of all my personal belongings and write down all the serial numbers on my items just in case I ever do get robbed. He was alluding to the fact that the police get called to my apartment complex quite often.
I was a little disappointed though. It turns out that they were all out of english pamphlets and all he had to give me was a spanish one. It's titled Programma de Ayuda Para Victimas de Violencia. I guess that's what happens when you live in a state like Florida. I guess I better get started studying up on Spanish so I can read the pamphlet he gave me.
