Title: How to save a life (3/3) - END

Author: helzfyah

Pairing: Jaeho, Jae/?

Rating: R, for adult themes

Warnings: mentions of drug abuse, addiction, and sexual relations while under the influence

Summary: What happens when a past love reappears in Jaejoong’s life and stirs up old memories he would rather forget?

A/N: Inspired, very loosely by wedspawn’s So Much Mine (an awesome story, check it out at her journal), as well as How to Save a life by the Fray. Other than that - I have NO idea where this came from.

“I told you to stay away from him.” Yunho stood near the door of Hyejun’s office, his arms folded. Hyejun eyed him silently.

“I don’t take orders from you, Jung Yunho. I’m the one person you can’t control.”

Yunho’s jaw tensed, the muscles clenching around his words. “You’re no good for him Hyejun. You’ve never been. Don’t think you can just wander back into his life now and jeopardize everything he’s worked for.”

“I never ‘wandered’ out of his life; he left me, in case you forgot.” Hyejun walked around his desk, taking a seat in the high-backed leather chair. “If he wants to see me, there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it.” He smiled, darkly amused. “And it kills you, doesn’t it?”

“I just never want to see him like that again - out of control, with his eyes red and his voice hoarse from screaming and crying for something he thinks he needs.”

Hyejun was silent, his eyes trained on the desk before him. “I’m not going to get him hooked again, Yunho,” he said eventually. “I can see he’s happy now, where he is. With Dong Bang Shin Ki. With you.” Hyejun looked up.

“I’m… sorry about the other night.” Yunho slanted a look at Hyejun, wary and disbelieving. “But when I saw him I wanted to keep him for myself, any way possible.” Hyejun spun the chair away from Yunho and looked through the glass wall down to the empty dancefloor of his club.

Sighing, he opened the bottom-most drawer of his desk and pulled out a small, fat manila envelope. He held it towards Yunho. “He’s yours now. So are these.”

Yunho took the envelope, confusion clearly written across his face. He opened it, pulling out a thick set of pictures and looking through them. “These are -” he began.

“The only night you ever took X and got a little too intimate with Jae.” Hyejun laughed bitterly. “If I had known then that the next day he’d be gone, I never would have tricked you into taking it. But I’ve never been able to resist something I shouldn’t want.”

Yunho replaced the pictures in the envelope. “If…” he paused, collecting his thoughts. “Jae’s strong,” he began again, “but you - you distract him. He loses focus, and becomes wrapped up in you. And I can’t let that happen. If you were clean, maybe. But now…” Yunho looked at Hyejun, an apology clear in his eyes.

“You love him.” Hyejun’s voice was soft. “I wasn’t sure before; I thought you just liked the idea of something pretty and wild in your bed.” Yunho tensed, his body coiling in anger. “I’m glad he has you to keep him out of trouble.” Hyejun stood, moving to his office door.

“Take care of him, Yunho. Keep my little street rat safe.”

Jaejoong was the only one awake when the phone rang at 7 a.m.

“Hello… Oh God, is he alright?... What do you mean, you don’t have that information? … Fine, I’m coming over there now.”

Jaejoong hung up, running through the apartment to the room he shared with Yunho. He quickly changed, pulling on yesterday’s jeans and a clean shirt.

“What’s wrong?” his scrambling around had awoken Yunho, who was now sitting up in their bed. Jae paused.

“The hospital called. Hyejun was admitted last night, unconscious from a drug overdose.”

Yunho snapped to alertness, climbing out of the bed and walking over to Jae. “Is he ok?”

“They couldn’t tell me.” Jaejoong brought his hand to his mouth, his voice cracking as he spoke. He took a deep breath and steadied his shoulders.

“I’m going to see him.” He picked up his keys, stopping short at Yunho’s next words.

“Why?” Jaejoong stared at Yunho, disbelief and confusion clear in his face.

“How can you even ask me that? He has no one else, Yunnie. I can’t leave him there, without knowing he’s safe.” Jaejoong opened the bedroom door, stepping outside.

“You still love him, don’t you?” Yunho’s words were so soft they barely reached Jaejoong’s ears. He closed the door, standing against it for a few silent moments.

“It’s difficult to stop loving Hyejun once you’ve started.” He didn’t meet Yunho’s eyes. “Tell the others I’ll be late for practice.”

Slowly, Jaejoong pushed open the door to room 326. Hyejun lay in bed, his face turned away from Jaejoong and towards the open window. He tried to enter the room quietly, but the squeak of his sneakers against the tile caused Hyejun to turn his head in his direction.

Jaejoong walked to the narrow bed, touching the back of Hyejun’s hand. “You’re alright,” he said, relief plain in his voice. Then he exploded.

“How could you be so stupid Junnie? The doctor told me they pumped a cocktail of drugs out of you. And if the bartender hadn’t found you…” Jae stopped, struggling to gain control of himself. Hyejun grabbed Jaejoong’s hand, pulling him to sit in the chair next to the bed.

“What are you doing here?” He tried to smile, but the effort was too much in his weakened state.

“I’m still listed as your emergency contact,” Jaejoong explained. “You’re supposed to keep that information up-to-date, you know. I don’t even know how they managed to find me.”

“You scared the fuck out of me, Hyejun.” Jaejoong clasped Hyejun’s hand tightly in his own. “You need to get help.”

Hyejun turned his head to avoid Jaejoong’s gaze. “I wouldn’t know where to start Jae. I think I’m too far gone to be helped.”

“No.” Hyejun shook his head at the pleading note in Jaejoong’s voice.

“You have your music and Yunho. I’ve never had much of anything. I used to have you, but I don’t anymore. There’s nothing left for me but this.”

“It doesn’t have to be like that. I could help you.” Jae squeezed his hand even tighter. “I can’t lose you to drugs Hyejun.”

“But you can’t help me. Not until I’m ready to help myself.” Jaejoong sat back.

“Are you?” Hyejun was silent.

“Mr. Kim?” They both turned to the doctor as he entered the room. “Could you please step outside? I need to check on Mr. Jang.”

Jaejoong nodded, standing and moving toward the door. He paused in the doorway, his eyes meeting Hyejun’s briefly before the doctor pulled the privacy curtain around the bed.

Yunho was leaning against the wall outside Hyejun’s room when Jaejoong exited. He shifted nervously, standing up straight before meeting Jaejoong’s eyes.

“How is he?”

“He’s fine. For now.” Jaejoong rubbed absently at a sore spot in the back of his neck. Yunho moved his hand and stepped closer, bringing his hands to Jaejoong’s neck to knead out the tension. Jaejoong sighed deeply, leaning into Yunho’s fingers.

“I’m sorry about this morning. You know I would never keep you from going to help someone you… love.” Jaejoong shook his head at the apology.

“Don’t. I’m used to you trying to protect me from everything by now.” He chuckled, the sound tired and worn to Yunho’s ear. Jaejoong turned around, burying his face in Yunho’s chest as Yunho’s arms wrapped tightly around his back and held him close.

“I love you Yunhoyah.” Yunho kissed Jae’s dark hair as it lay against his forehead.

“I love you too, Boo.”

END.

Before you throw rocks at me - Yes I know the end sounds unfinished, but that's because it is. I didn't want to finish Hyejun's story. His story is too complicated for even me, his creator, to resolve. Like Jae said he's fine - For now.
Anyway, I hope all of you enjoyed it. THANK YOU all for the lovely comments. *Hands out cookies* I'm pleased to know that you appreciate my writing. i hope you stay tuned for the other fic I have in store for you.

Comments are love! If you disagree with the way that I ended, do tell me. (And if you see any spelling mistakes, point them out - my eyes died about an hour ago.
