It was a dark and stormy night, the kind that Grace Van Pelt never liked. The kind where lightning rents the sky and thunder and rain war for which one is louder. It might be foolish but she’d heard one too many ghost stories on nights like this from high school boys who thought it might be funny to scare the coach’s daughter, stories that were far too close for comfort once she’d heard other stories from her cousin Yolanda.
She’d never been able to sleep soundly on nights like this.
But tonight, when she lies stiff and scared in bed, holding her pillow, strong arms close around her from behind. She doesn’t jump, only smiles, relaxes into the hold.
“Don’t worry,” Cho murmurs into her ear, in a voice that’s half teasing, half reassuring, and it makes her smile, because there’s no other man on earth who could pull off that particular combination. “I’ll keep you safe.”
Van Pelt smiles and closes her eyes, because he is Kimball Cho, and he is an honest man, and she believes him.
