Offered: Storytelling games by Ken & Jo Walton

Feb 02, 2010 23:11

While we're on the subject of Jo Walton... before she became a critically-acclaimed author she did some gaming work, among which was a series of storytelling card games all with titles of the form Into the D_____ C_____. She designed them with her (now former) husband Ken, and they were published by the Magellanica Company between 1993 and 1995 (or so). They are very hard to find now.

Each game contains 200 cards with phrases on them appropriate to the game's genre. Players get a hand of cards and pick one to be the ending they are working towards. The others are played in turn to form a story, with the players creating narrative as they go to introduce the phrases. Sample phrases from the epic fantasy version: "a strange old man," "without warning," "beneath the city streets," and "a sight not for mortal eyes."

The four games in this lot are Into the Dragon's Cave (the aforementioned epic fantasy game), Into the Deserted Chapel (gothic horror), Into the Domain of Capella (space opera), and Into the Dark Continent (Boy's Own Adventure). (In light of that last it would as well to note that in none of these is the premise necessarily taken seriously - subversion is probably the common mode in which to play any of these.)

I should also note that the different genre sets can be mixed together.

The cards in all the sets have been separated. They don't appear to have been used much. They do have some curl to them, as they are of fairly light material - they are still perfectly usable.

Price includes shipping in the US and Canada. I will ship anywhere else, but might require additional money to cover the cost - ask if you need to know how much.

Minimum Bid: $20
