rock and roll is dead(ish)

I was reading about a band on AllMusic and I came across this quote:

"...but the vocals were the true star of the show (no small feat in a musical climate overrun with disaffected Lou Reed-esque mumblers and bland Eddie Vedder impersonators)."

The bit in parentheses is one of the most spot-on descriptions of the state of mainstream rock music in the last decade or so.

On the upside, I think the genre-benders will save the world. More and more artists are blending rock/metal with electronica/dance with surprising success. I cite MGMT, Dissociatives, and Men Without Pants as examples to name a few. And then there's my favorite new discovery -- I Are Droid and their album, I Are Debut. I think they just might be the next big thing.
