my backyard can beat up your backyard

Yeah, so I couldn't stay away from LJ.

Though I'm not exactly back either. At first I had to get away, but then I decided I wanted to stay away as part of my greater plan to spend less time on the computer. But I keep coming across things I want to share and, since I'm alone most of the day...

Anyway, check out this picture of the Mojave Desert as it appears here in Rosamond. This is actually a few blocks to the west, but it might as well be my backyard for all the similarities.

Notice the strange, tan stuff in the center of the picture? They're not rocks.

They're...

SNAKES!!!

And they're rattlers too -- Mojave Greens to be specific. And they're emerging from hibernation in record numbers from underground chambers like the one in the lower left of the photo.

Keep in mind that this is occurring all over the desert, the southern end of which is only 30-45 minutes away from The Valley, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and places like that. So, while New York City may be the most culturally diverse population center in this part of the world, damn, I've yet to find a place that holds a candle to Los Angeles when it comes to environmental diversity. I mean, I went to school with people in LA who have never even seen a snake outside of a zoo exhibit.
