Briefly coming up for air.
This feels like it's been a very long day.
I didn't have much to do at work today, so I was poking around trying different Twitter desktop apps. You see, I use TweetDeck. And I really dig TweetDeck.
See, look how pretty it is. My whole Twitter feed in one column. All my @s in another. One for my DMs. And I can add columns and put whoever I want in the group. I can make one for just Minneapolis people. Or one for just celebrities. Or one for all the slutty girls who want to have sex with me. Except that I block all those, so it would be a pretty empty column...
Unfortunately the latest TweetDeck upgrade (v0.33.2) doesn't like my work connection. :(
The columns just stay empty. It works everywhere that I use my computer except when plugged into the ethernet cable at work. I opened a ticket and sent them the debug reports and waited. Today, I got this from support: there is nothing in the log to suggest an issue with TweetDeck, so I can only assume that there is some different network configuration in place at work, firewalls, proxies etc that is causing the problem.
Grrrrrrrrrr. Yes, the problem is something with the network configuration. BUT, the previous version of TweetDeck WORKED! It worked the day I upgraded. Hell, I got the upgrade notice because I was logged on to TweetDeck while at work! And it stopped working with the upgrade! So no, it wasn't a DIFFERENT configuration at work. It is TweetDeck accessing the network differently!!! And they won't admit to a change or give me anyway around it.
So... Now I have to use something else on my laptop for Twitter. I'm still using TweetDeck everywhere else since I haven't found anything I like. I keep finding programs that have one or two of the features I like, but are missing something else entirely.
If anyone has a recommendation, I'd love to hear it. The things I love about TweetDeck & want to find in something else:
Easy to mark Tweets as read (I do it in TweetDeck by arrowing up through them as I read)
The ability to clear out read Tweets
Multiple columns
If I'm not doing anything, it stays where I left it. i.e. it doesn't scroll up to new tweets. I'm often leaving it sit anywhere from a couple minutes to over an hour. I want it where I left it!
Easy to find reply & retweet buttons
I know there are more things, but I just can't think of them right now. Clearing out read Tweets is a big one. I like to clear out the clutter.
And yes, I know I have an iPhone for Twitter. It's just easier to type & click links on an actual computer!
The awesome thing which I didn't have time to write a post about today is w00tstock 2.3!
Paul & Storm, who many of you have seen as Jonathan Coulton's opening band, have started a series of shows called w00tstock! It is them, Wil Wheaton, Adam Savage & whatever guest stars they can wrangle up doing a show full of wonderfully geeky awesomeness. And they're finally leaving the West Coast and bringing it to Minneapolis!!! Yay! And they're doing a Chicago show too.
Minneapolis is on June 7th at the Guthrie Theater. My spring/early summer just keeps getting more & more full of awesome. I'll actually be meeting Wil Wheaton the previous weekend when I'm down at the Phoenix ComiCon on May 27-30, so I'm sure we'll be BFFs by the time he comes to Mpls. ;)

Television host/special-effects artist Adam Savage (“MythBusters”), actor/author/blogger Wil Wheaton (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”, “Stand By Me”) and music-comedy duo Paul and Storm (hey; that’s us!) present a night of songs, readings, comedy, demonstrations, short films, special guests, and other clever widgets born from and dedicated to the enthusiasms, obsessions, trials and joys of geek pride.
This is the dawning of the Age of Geekdom-and its voices will ring true at w00tstock.

With all the fuss over the penguin there's really only one way one can respond to that: "@AEEvans Those lilies are SO Photoshopped! LOL" hee hee
How frustrating would that be, to get this picture of this amazing thing (the penguin, not the lilies) and have to constantly deal w/people telling you it's not real. We were DMing about it and he says "But I know it's not 'shopped, so that's good enough for me!" And really, if you know anything about Photoshop there never was any evidence of it. If the picture had been 'shopped he should be working for Adobe or at NAPP w/Scott Kelby!
OK, this has all turned out much longer than planned. Let's throw a few LJ cuts on up there.
And now that I've taken this short break to babble at y'all, it's back into the design world for me. I'm putting together a newspaper ad for work.
