My sister has the same problem with what I like to call the smoker's hack. She claims it is post-nasal drip caused by allergies - nevermind that the cough is there year round.

My mother in law was a chain smoker for more than forty years. When she was diagnosed with lung cancer, she said that had nothing to do with it. It was all the fault of the atom bomb. She was a Nagasaki survivor.
