Another anniversary today. Not as important as the one two days ago though...
Today is my LJ fifth anniversary.
Five years ago I had one LJ friend:
chebutykin. Now I've got just over 200 and I have met or know more than half of them in real life. There are others that I am hoping to get to meet soon. (
icecon_2008 is only a year away!)
I don't know whether to be annoyed or amused that my 5th LJversary comes right after LJ/SixAparts latest censorship kerfluffle.
I haven't posted about the latest yet, although I have been reading and following it.
LJ's official response, FIVE DAYS after the deletings occurred is
here.
davedujour, who isn't involved in Harry Potter fandom and, as far as I know, doesn't look at naked drawings of Snape/Harry on a regular basis, presents his view of the situation
here. He has many valid points.
Many of my fandom friends are setting up alternate journals at GreatestJournal, InsaneJournal, etc, even though they are by & large not in the HP fandom, but rather Supernatural and Whedonverse. For now, they plan to stay here and the new journals are just backups.
Me, personally? I'm here for the long haul.
~I don't like censorship.
~I don't like LJ deleting an entire account because one drawing which was not even child porn didn't have "artistic merit."
~I don't like LJ refusing to clarify their policies.
~I don't like them stating one thing and doing something else.
So why am I staying then?
~I have a permanent account. No, I didn't get it in the most recent perm account sale.
~Because I have a permanent account and don't ever give LJ/6A money anymore my leaving in protest would not affect them negatively. It would actually benefit them because I wouldn't be using their bandwidth/server space anymore.
~I like the community I've made for myself here.
~I've got LJ friends from Iceland to Antarctica, from England to Alaska. Most of them aren't going to be going to another system, so even if my main site was somewhere else I'd still be checking in here.
~While I do have a fair share of fandom friends, they are only a part of my LJ 'family.'
~Also, I just don't want to deal with the hassle of setting up new journals. If I was willing to maintain multiple journals my Vox journals would actually have content in them!
So to sum things up:
I've been here for 5 years! Yay!
chebutykin is not my only friend now! Yay!
LJ/6A are pissing off the users again! Boo!
I'm staying anyway! Yay!
