If you need the money more than anything, ditch the Pelican. Tips fly out of your pocket way too easily, and the pay per hour doesn't compare to Publix.
But if you want to keep from going completely insane, ditch Publix. Cashiering/bagging is so mind-numbingly awful, that it's actually stunted people's mental growth.
If you decide to stay at Publix, it's absolutely CRUCIAL that you find someone there that you can banter with throughout the day. If not... you're in trouble.
I'm not cashier/bagging. I'm working in the bakery.
Actually, i'm pretty careful about my tips, and keep in mind I was paid $4.25 an hour for delivering pizza, and the tips meant I was making more like $15 an hour. This is a swanky restaurant where the entree's -start- at upwards of $15 a plate.
Hmm. Bakery is much better than up front. If it were me, I'd stick with Publix. I deal with enough people and I tend to get angry when people buy 20-30 bucks worth of ice cream that takes me 10 minutes to prepare and then I get stiffed for the tip.
The less people I have to put up with, the better.
On the scale, Publix weighs more. You get the benefits. You can walk there. And the money isn't bad at all.
As much as you're making from the Rusty Pelican, it's a hassle for you to get rides there, not only for you, but for the people that give you those rides.
Of course, in defense of Rusty Pelican, it's a high-energy and thus high-paying job in the end. It's also challenging, and despite the soreness, the cash i wind up with at the end of a work night will be rewarding.
True, i'll probably burn out a lot faster.. And Publix is, well, once I get trained I can do shit like that with my eyes closed. There is no challenge.

I'd choose Publix, most definately.
