Alfred travels with the hunters up to Siberia, tracking the werebear. Passing through a small town, they encounter a ghost, Katyusha. Turns out that she was the sister of the werebear, Ivan, who was murdered by her husband after he found out that their family's male heirs inherited the curse that turned them into bears when they were enraged. Katyusha is absolutely terrified of Alfred when she spots him, and hides back in the lake where she was drowned. They attempt to exorcise her, when Natalia, head of the Russia Branch, arrives. She too is highly aggressive towards Alfred. The truth comes out that Alfred looks startlingly like the man that killed Katyusha, though Alfred has never been to Russia in his life. The truth is it was one of Alfred Kirkland's many identical descendants, though the Hunters don't figure that out until Arthur arrives.
Meanwhile, Arthur has made it to a remote village in the middle of the Tibetan mountains, dragging a thoroughly miserable Matthew along with him. They manage to lose Feliciano and Ludwig as they cross the border. After clambering their way up several mountains, they finally come across the house where Maya (fem!India - this was written before the official India appeared) and Li Shui (Hong Kong) are hiding, along with jiangshi Yao and a kitsune, Kiku. Arthur confronts Maya about her selling out the coven, about how it was Arthur she had quarrel with, not the comparatively innocent kids. It sparks a fight, and Matthew jumps in to stop them, getting brutally wounded. It does make them pause, and finally Yao and Kiku tell them to get out. Arthur warns Maya she'll face justice in the Vampire Court, but before they can get any further in that regard, Asia Branch hunters show up. They leg it, but Yao can't move nearly as fast. He's captured and killed. Maya, distraught at his death, storms off with Li Shui, Arthur staying behind to look after Matthew, knowing he can track Maya for days after she's gone, now he's found her scent again. Arthur patches Matthew up, and they follow Maya's trail to Siberia.
