Language

I have decided to learn Latin.

I know, I know. My father already told me it is a dead language. I’ve been debating between Latin, German, Spanish and Japanese. I know that any one of those would probably be a more utilitarian choice, but ... well ... I gotta be me. Hopefully, the 2005 version of me will be fluent in Latin. The Romans spoke Latin. It was the language of the Church. It is the language of science. I don’t know how it stacks up against other tongues in categories like grammar, declination and vocabulary, but I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of learning it. For me, it represents a sort of mascot language for Western Civilization. That really appeals to me.

By the way, my father found a pretty slick software package advertised in National Geographic. If you are interested in learning a second language, go check out www.rosettastone.com. It is easily the best software I have found, bar none. Plus, they have an online demo, and it includes the first lesson of more than 15 different languages. So you can try out a few different things and decide which one you like. It’s expensive, but as far as language tools go, it is really competitive.
