Fun and Aging in Las Vegas.

My original plan was to spend my birthday weekend camping with all my friends on the coast halfway between LA and SF. Thank the internet for the loss of that option, since campsites are (I discovered) reserved up to 7 months in advance. After much internet research, and a day of driving up and down the coast, I have determined that there are literally no available sites for my birthday weekend. The big camping trip will have to wait until next year. But at least I've found the perfect spot for June 2007.

But there is hope yet. Hexadamsel is being sent to Las Vegas the week of May 24 to photograph a convention for her job. Because of that, I have decided to celebrate my birthday a month early.

That’s right. I’m turning 30, and I’m going to Las Vegas. Very mid-life, no?

This is especially fortuitous for a number of reasons. First, my hometown pals have been planning a Vegas trip for "sometime in May" for the past four months. So they'll be there. My sister (who lives in Tucson) also happens to be in Vegas that very week! So I'll get to see her, too!

So here is my plan. I'm going to drive to Los Angeles (hear me out) after work on Friday, May 19, and stay in a hotel (or something) Friday and Saturday night. This will allow me to attend Renaissance Faire on Saturday, May 20, and then breakfast with friends on Sunday, May 21, before heading out for Vegas. After a Prime Rib lunch in Barstow (my mother tells me I shouldn't pass up the chance to eat at Idle Spurs) I'll hit Vegas late Sunday afternoon.

For the nights of Sunday, May 21, through Wednesday, May 24, Hexadamsel and I will be staying in the Sahara. We’ll check out on Thursday, May 25 and head home.

Anyway, the upshot of all this info is that I hope to see as many friends as possible on this little excursion. So please look for me at Faire on Saturday (May 20), and call me if you think you can go to Vegas later that week.

Next year, we'll do the massive camping excursion. Perhaps we'll take turns for the next couple of birthdays, camping one year and visiting Las Vegas the next. That should keep my interest at least until I'm forty. Strange. Forty doesn't scare me at all. Maybe I'm finally growing up?
