Rewatch S14: Nightmare Logic (14x05) and Optimism (14x06)

Jan 14, 2020 21:33

I'm doing two episodes in one post, because I did both rewatches on the same day and then realized that I didn't have much to say about Optimism.

Let's get into it....

Nightmare Logic

Maggie as hunter (and later as a boss hunter) is the dumbest thing and majorly annoying.

I remember the exchange of information scene you cite as making me laugh.

Another episode where the one-shot character (the adult daughter) is very well written and feels real. (Why not give us an au hunter as well done instead of Maggie? Sigh.)

I thought in retrospect the djinn's recoil at Dean was to give us a hint about Michael still being in him.

AU Bobby's story felt forced, like 'time to shoehorn some backstory in here.' Though there was a small payoff in the parallel to his leadership in the au and Sam's leadership here...

In Optimism I liked Dean and Jack's story a lot--Jack's reactions were very in character and the twists were surprising.

Sam and Charlie's story was another one that felt like the writers needed to stick some backstory in.

And the whole fly-people montage made no sense. What was it supposed to make me feel?

Agreed agreed.

Yes, it totally is. I just prefer the interpretation that Dean's mind/experience/nightmares itself is scary.

In Optimism I liked Dean and Jack's story a lot--Jack's reactions were very in character and the twists were surprising.

Yeah, it worked on rewatch too - I didn't immediately recall that it was the girl until she said that line about being the last of her family in the town.

But yeah, the fly thing was bizarre and I'm not sure what we supposed to take away from that.
