Oh, that was brilliant! I read it on the train this morning and had to make a concerted effort not to cry in front of strangers.

Of course in the Winchester household there would be knives just lying about!

Sam would have recognized its engine a mile away.

Damn straight he would! It was one of my complaints about one of the episodes where Dean sat outside the motel in the Impala, but Sam wasn't supposed to know he was out there. Hello, he would know just from the sound!

as if Dean had driven out to find him with it clenched in his fist.

What a poignant image, and I love that you were able to work it in even though it's from Sam's POV.

"Promise me you'll look after yourself, Sammy."

Oh, of course he would say this! It's one thing that is definitely missing from a lot of people's versions of Sam going to Stanford. In many of them, Dean's just gutted by the thought of losing Sam. Which is of course true. But typical Dean would be more worried about Sam's safety out there in the wide world by himself than he would be about his own loneliness. His knee-jerk reaction wouldn't be to angst over what he's gonna do without Sam, it would be to worry about what horrible things could happen to Sam if he wasn't watching over him! I love this reaction because it's SO DEAN!

John had always gone through bracelets faster than they could tie them on anyway.

Oh, the ending just broke my heart, especially that last line. You're awesome, hon! YAY! This is totally my new fanon!
