I love your recaps. You catch things that I don't. I too wish Sam had friends. I don't think that not making friends is a basic part of his personality, because he had friends in college and clicked with Sarah and was close enough with the guy at the motel he worked at to know the guy's father was sick (when Dean was in Purgatory). He just doesn't make friends when Dean is around, which says something, but I'm not sure what.

Now nitpicky percysowner is going to be nitpicky. For the record it is SHEMP not Chimp. It was his real nickname, but his family didn't hate him enough to call him Chimp, which is a blessing. Also, I'm pretty sure the name is Portia after the Shakespeare character, not Porsche after the car. Although maybe a woman/dog familiar wants to tell the world that she is as good as a Porsche.

Oops! As you can see, I know nothing about the Stooges, at all... besides the fact that they existed and Americans seem to like them.

Also, I'm pretty sure the name is Portia after the Shakespeare character, not Porsche after the car.

Oops again! Man, names are hard! I'll go fix those. SIGH....

Good point!

Admittedly I'm American and I HATE the Stooges. People hitting and hurting other people is not my type of funny. But they are ubiquitous here and I kind of picked it up by osmosis.

Yeah, that's how I felt about them too - but apparently there much easier to avoid here in Canada. :P

Again, I like the fact that Dean's not a dog person.

If you'd been torn apart by hellhounds, you wouldn't be either. :) Personally I'm kind of impressed that he doesn't freak out over everything bigger than a cocker spaniel.

...what I actually think is going on with Dean is this: Dean got back from purgatory and was pretty high...on his own goddamn skills...So shutting the gates of hell was going to be his coup de grace...then suddenly Sam's doing the trials and all the wind is out of Dean's sails. So, of course he wants Sam to tap out and let Dean take over - because Dean was itching for the fight this whole time.

This makes a lot of psychological sense for Dean's character.

...we all only really trust ourselves. Think about when you ask someone else to do something for you? You give them super careful instructions and try to be as thorough as possible...because you aren't inside that persons head.

This is so majorly true! Just like in your perfect example of mailing your sister's package--I have been on both sides of that equation and it is one of the few things that can really make me crazy...

I also think that this is the point where Dean decides that if he can't run this race, then he's going to be the best goddamn support crew that the world has ( ... )

I'm glad you agree with me!

And I'm glad I was able to improve the episode a little for you. It's not one of my favourites either, but there have been worse! :P

I'm glad you were able to get something out of this episode - I find it pretty unwatchable, and now I can get the important parts from you. ;-). Anyone who feels the same way I do will probably appreciate what brightly_lit did with it here.

Hahaha, she really hit the nail on the head there. Hilariously well done "rewrite".

Really, the only important bits were the brother angst and how Sam doing the trials affects the dynamic - everything else you pretty much have to suspend all disbelief.

"Dean undercutting Portia's speech by calling her hot IS annoying and sexist/misogynistic. He's reducing her by commenting on her attractiveness rather than actually addressing her argument. That being said, it's also realistic and THAT'S WHAT GUYS DO! It actually proves that she just won the argument, because Dean has no counter argument for her - the only thing he can do is turn it into a conversation about how hot she is, get the last word in, and hope no one notices that he didn't actually address any of her points.Well said. This didn't annoy me at all, because it is so realistic. And it's very much in character. Getting the last word in while hoping no one notices he just lost the argument is something we see Dean do pretty regularly ( ... )

Right, whereas I didn't mind those other ones. I felt Dean was more reacting to Annie sleeping with every member of his family, more than her having sex a lot. And for some reason "good girl" didn't bother me as much as it normally would have - maybe because it bothers me more when the girl in question isn't a nervous wreck, so there's no need to be patronizing? I don't know. *shrug*
