Speak of the devil! UPS showed up with my DVDs this morning, so this afternoon I was able to dive right in and rewatch the pilot. Now, I must admit, I've seen parts of the pilot several times now, because I watched a few scenes on Youtube while I was writing my last story. The cool thing about the DVD though is that they have deleted scenes and

Oh yeah! I forgot to mention the accents. I think Jared's is adorable in the early episodes.
And of course! It would have been Nov. 2nd, because Dean shows up on the 31st, and Sam spends two days with him and then comes back on the Monday. I rechecked the opening scene, and I can't tell if Sam's nursery clock has two hands or one (I can't tell if one of the black lines is a shadow or a clock hand) so, it's either around 2:30am when the demon strikes (could be ten to three) or it's about 12 after 8...ok, wait...maybe that little grasshoper thing is the minute hand, in which case it is about 2:55am - which makes more sense seeing as how Mary is already in bed and John is passed out in front of the TV. I doubt they would be so sound asleep at 8pm.
So yeah, ok! Mystery solved. Dean's a clever guy. Wow...I wonder if Dean's made a note to check on same EVERY year on Nov. 2nd at 2:55am? Or if it was just a fluke this time around. In anycase, cool. I'm surprised I didn't pick up on that before, seeing as how I'm usually obsessed with timelines.
I think you are right about the Mary-John reversal universe. Probably the only difference would be that since Mary knows who she's dealing with, and knows that she was the one who gave it access to Sam, the quest to kill the YED would probably be less about vengeance and more about protecting Sam...though, I'm sure that she'd be pissed off that the YED had given her a deal so that John would live and then simply taken him away again ten years later. But yes, no matter who died, I think those boys would have become hunters either way.
To the time thing: Sam has this great line towards the end when he's telling Dean that he can't go with him to Colorado. He says this throw-away line that's something like "..I only have 13 hours..." and to me that really juxtaposes the brothers right there, because you get the sense that although Dean knew that Sam had something on "monday" he had no idea that "monday" was only 13 hours away at that point, yet Sam knew it exactly.

I wonder if Dean looked at his watch, realized the date and time, and had this kind of irrational compulsion to check on Sam. Only it turned out not to be irrational. Now I wonder if he knocked, didn't get an answer, and then decided something must be wrong so he busted his way in. Or if he just broke in from the get-go because he didn't want Sam to know he was checking up on him, so he was going to be creepy stalker/lurker about it.
Actually, I read Dean's reaction to the 13 hours line as being dismay at the reminder. I think he'd had so much fun hanging out with Sam again that he'd totally forgotten that Sam had to go back. Or maybe not forgotten, but had pushed it to the back of his mind. And now Sam's reminded him, it kinda shattered his bubble, and he was a little resentful, because he wants so much for Sam to stay but by saying that, Sam is making it clear how very much he *doesn't* want to stay, and that hurts.

Yeah, I agree with you about Dean's reaction to the 13 hour line, he was definitely a kicked puppy at the reminder...but I still think it's a good difference of characters/lives - where Sam knows the exact number of hours, and Dean probably just registers it as "soon". So, Sam's line had a duel purpose, both in pointing out the differences between the Winchester-Life and Normal-Life, and also pointing out to Dean that he is serious about making it back to the interview, that nothing has changed about what kind of life he wants to live.
Though, Sam does say that maybe he can meet up with Dean later, which I think somewhat points to the idea that Sam might have considered hunting on the side, if his Dad hadn't just told him to "stay gone." - but that's a whole other debate.

I wish he'd actually say that, that he missed his brother. Dean needs to hear stuff like that from time to time.

Agreed! Mind you, whenever Sam tries to, he lays it on to thick (and usually right before they might get killed) and Dean tells him to shut-up because he's being sappy.
