I had my second day on Falling Skies today. And it was a fine example of how boring being an extra is.
My call-up time was 9:30. I was actually called to set at 5:30pm for about 15 minutes...and then again for an hour at 8pm. I was there for twelve hours.
So, basically, I was paid to crochet a scarf and think about all the stuff that I was going to tell you guys, that I forgot to tell you before...
Guest Actor
Guest Actor endeared himself even more to me today....
The snack table was a fair distance away, down these darkened corridors....so, yeah...I was walking to get snacks, and I had long since passed "set" where rehearsals were taking place....and then I hear this very soft beautiful Spanish-style classical guitar, and there is a faint glow of a light from an otherwise darkened alcove...and there, sitting and playing the guitar, is Guest Actor.
Wardrobe Adventures
So, my first extra gig ever was on Diary of a Wimpy Kid III (You may remember it as the time I played a lesbian mother of a child I had in my teens). Now, the way wardrobe works for extras is that you bring your own clothes. You bring three different outfits and the wardrobe department chooses what they like best. If they don't like anything you brought, then they'll dress you in something of theirs...but, statistically, you end up wearing your own clothes more often than not.
When I showed up at DofaWK3, one of the wardrobe people told me to wear my brown skirt with my beige top. Okay, done. Then, the rest of the afternoon, I had this other wardrobe lady constantly moving me from the foreground to the background, because "UGH! TOO MUCH BEIGE!" She REALLY hated my beige shirt. It was as though I had personally wronged her.
So, the last few extra gigs I've done, I have left the beige shirt at home. Except last week, I thought "well, the call-up said to bring earth-tones...so, sure, I'll bring the beige shirt." Cut to standing in line to have my stuff reviewed by wardrobe, and I suddenly realise that IT IS THE SAME WARDROBE LADY.
She ended up putting me in an over-sized pink striped sweater. I have to admit, it really made my eyes pop.
Being an Extra Makes Me Feel Old
So, in DofaWK3, they made me a lesbian mother of a 13 and 10 year old. That was a blow. Then, last week while working on Falling Skies, I was walking around the background "socializing" as you do...which meant going up to people and being all smiley and acting as though you know them, and mouthing nonsensical words at them, which they then smile and nod to....and I step up to this lovely older woman, and she CLEARLY mouths "How are the kids?" to me. Sigh. I blamed it on the over-sized pink striped sweater...but it's a flimsy excuse and I know it.
What do Sam Winchester's Hands, Eragon, and The Grey all have in common?
They all feature the same dude. Well, "feature" is a strong word. Sam's hand double is named Greg. He says it's a SWEET gig (emphasis his). "I do some typing on the computer, scroll through a phone contacts list..."
So, to all you people who drool over hand!porn....do you honestly just like the hands? Or do you like them because you think they're attached to a certain actor? Greg is tall, but not nearly as tall as Jared. He does have long fingers. He looks like a construction worker, and he smokes. He is also a Harry Potter fan.
If you want to know what he looks like, he has a small role in Eragon...that movie about the dragons. He gets killed when someone touches him on the temple. He hates the movie...for a little bit of "extras' humour": He told us all the reasons why the movie was terrible, and then he ended with "I did what I could to save it, but...." and the table erupted in laughter.
And, if you're wondering how the well-reviewed Liam Neeson film The Grey fits in to all this: Greg's hands can also be seen in that. He plays the pilot of the doomed flight. Apparently you can see his hands as sparks fly across the instrument panel.
Gossip
Because we were sitting around waiting for so long today, I got to hear the extra wrangler have many a conversation and business phone call. One such phone call was informing an agent (I assume) that they will never be working with a particular 12 year-old kid again...because "basically, he's a little shit."
Also, apparently there's a current production in town where the leads secretly hate each other and won't do scenes together. Apparently "if you see them kiss, then it's both them, but otherwise they use body doubles."
I have no idea what show it is - I didn't overhear that part. Still, it makes me grateful that Supernatural doesn't have that problem...and every time I've ever talked to anyone who works on Supernatural, they only ever had good things to say.
Where to Look For Me
It's still episode 209. I'm still wearing the pink sweater. Today I walked back and forth outside of a window....and then I ran frantically back and forth outside a window, because aliens were attacking or something. So...yeah, don't look at the pretty actors during scenes that may or may not be in an office, look out the window - watch for the pink sweater! (I'm walking with an older black guy, I'm running with a blonde girl.)
And thus ends the Adventures in Background-Work for the foreseeable future. I have far too much stuff going on in my regular life. I'm thinking that they're going to ask me back, but I'm really going to have to turn them down...which will probably piss them off a little, but them's the breaks. I also think that maybe I just get super bored doing the same show more than once. I do have to say though, that so far Falling Skies has had the best catering/crafty.
