Though didn't that one imply that he was born to a normal family who then rejected him because he was a monster?

Oh yeah, I forgot about him! In that case, I'm pretty sure it must be the case that he was a rape-baby, whose Shifter-father never came to reclaim him. The shifter in Skin spoke along similar lines.

Though I do have to agree somewhat with the avclub reviewer that it was a little too easy. And it just feels a little fic-y, because I swear I've read it before.

I do agree that it all seemed a little easy. But, that being said, I'm not going to harp on it for being fanservice or fic-y. The fact is that a lot of people write on these themes, using these plot-devices for a REASON. I don't think the fact that it's over used in fanfic should preclude it from being used on the show. I don't really think that it was a show about a baby so much as they used the baby to hit the major points - Sam needing Dean's help. Dean not trusting the Campbells. The Alpha-Monster story-arc...and a catalyst to cause Lisa to be an awesome understanding girlfriend that gives us the ONLY way Dean would return to hunting without it making him a complete douchebag.

And on the topic of child endangerment, I think the difference here was that it was a baby. I think the other children were a bit older and could have things explained to them.

Yes, I think I agree with you on here.

Though I'm not really complaining about potential pandering. I just kept getting little bits of deja vu. (and maybe a teeny bit of vindication for some stories i've enjoyed?)

I like though that they didn't drop the "something wrong with sam" vibe, even though he was acting more normal.

I agree. I think in this case, it's less the shows fault and more ours - when you read a lot of fanfic (which I sort of touched on in my review) your perception of the show can get a bit skewed. If we weren't that involved in fandom, we probably wouldn't see the baby storyline as pandering...or at least we might not.

I'm also happy they didn't drop the "something wrong with Sam" vibe - AND that we got to see a little of the Sam we knew, in that he wasn't COMPLETELY cold and still had the capacity to be frazzled and want his brother. I think they're doing it pretty well...giving us Sam, but a Sam that we aren't 100% sure we can completely trust.

Nah, probably not. Though..there might be a little fan-pandering there of the normal sort.

There's something kind of time-honored about tough men being awkward around and then protective of babies. And now we've had the Supernatural version ;)
