[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Alex Wilder
FANDOM: Runaways (Marvel-616)
CHRONOLOGY: Some time after Runaways v2 #24
CLASS: Probably closest to Anti-Hero, but he has a history of villainy that he’d be hitting up against
SUPERHERO NAME: Alex doesn’t play that game
ALTER EGO: Alex Wilder, 16-year-old truant

BACKGROUND:
In 1984, three giants called the Gibborim gathered together six couples from various walks of life to offer them power and the chance to live forever in paradise. In exchange, each year these six couples would sacrifice one innocent life (the Rite of Blood) and prepare the soul for the Gibborim to feast on (the Rite of Thunder). After 25 years of this, the Gibborim would have the power to destroy the world and create a new one in its place, and the six most faithful would be allowed to cross over to it with them. Thus, the Pride was born, and their control over L.A. and much of the West Coast was soon cemented.

After three years of rivalry for who would earn a place in the Gibborim’s new world, one of the couples revealed that they were expecting a child. It was eventually decided, though some were reluctant, that the easiest way to ensure that the Pride’s legacy lived on evenly was for each of them to bear a child that they would surrender their own spot in paradise to.

It was in the Pride’s 19th year that Alex Wilder was snooping through the hidden passages of his parents Malibu dream house and witnessed the Rite of Blood. Confused and horrified, he spent the next few nights sneaking into his father’s sub-basement, learning everything he could about the Pride and its purpose. In doing so, he stumbled across a coup planned within the Pride, and he came up with a plan to meet it.

For the next year, he practiced his skills at tactics and leadership over MMORPGs, cultivating a close group of players who hung on his every order. By the time the next Rite of Blood came around, everything was ready and he put the first phase into action. He led the other children of the Pride down the same passage he’d discovered the year before, and inspired them to run away in response to what they saw there. Not being able to turn to the police, who their parents controlled already, the runners snuck around, trying to collect evidence and weaponry, and occasionally facing off against their parents. Nico Minoru gained the Staff of One and its magical abilities, Gert Yorkes found a genetically modified velociraptor she was psychically bound to, Chase Stein swiped flawethrowing gloves and x-ray specs, Karolina Dean discovered her alien origins and the abilities to fly and project energy that came with them, Molly Hayes mutant powers of super strength manifested, and Alex came into possession of the Abstract, a book that told the past, present, and future of the Pride.

His army was assembled, but they weren’t yet prepared to go to battle. So, under the pretense of righting the wrongs their parents had caused, they fought crime around town occasionally. He led a vampire to the abandoned hotel they made their home to see how they’d handle it. A situation with Cloak and Dagger got out of hand, and, while trapped in the Darkforce Dimension, he came close to admitting the whole plan to Nico, with whom he’d formed some kind of romantic relationship. When it looked as though the two heroes might return to New York and give word back to the Avengers, compromising Alex’s plan, he sent an anonymous tip to the Pride to let them deal with the situation.

After months of hiding, when the Hostel was compromised, it was finally time to take action. The night for the Rite of Thunder had arrived. When they finally confronted their parents in the Gibborim’s inner sanctuary, they came through without nearly as much trouble as expected, though in the process all of the kids except Alex and Karolina were incapacitated. It was only then that Alex, having gained the arsenal of each of his teammates whose abilities weren’t inherent, took Karolina out and revealed his loyalty to his parents.

Exposing the attempted coup by the Deans and the Hayeses, he proposed a new one for his family and the Minorus. But as he outlined everything to Nico, the other girls recovered and the fight continued. Slowly, the parents did so as well, but in the chaos Molly crushed the container that held the Pride’s offering, releasing the soul just as the Gibborim arrived. When his father tried to assuage their anger, Alex wouldn’t stand for it. He interrupted by stating his own responsibility for the whole situation and was promptly paid for it when they responded by burning him to a crisp. To further express their outrage at the failure of the ritual, they resolved to destroy the whole group before losing cohesion with this plane. The parents did their best to buy time while the rest of the kids escaped, and the whole place exploded behind them.

Alex wasn’t without his contingencies, though. When he disappeared, his gaming partners took notice, and one of them hacked into his computer, finding instructions waiting for them. With another copy of the Abstract and various artifacts from each family, they initiated a ritual to pull Alex from the timeline moments before he died.

Unfortunately, they never never found the ring to properly translate the spell, and it was misdirected to pulling his father, Geoffrey, from 1985, only a year after first being contacted by the Gibborim. He formed a New Pride with Alex’s friends, starting a new deal with the giants to resurrect his wife and son. This called for a new sacrifice, and for that he set his sights on the runners. But while Geoffrey failed to complete the ritual before they wiped his memories and sent him back to his own time, Gert died in the fight.

His own death never kept Alex from keeping an eye on things, though. When Chase got his hands on the New Pride’s Abstract, he intended to sacrifice himself to the Gibborim in exchange for Gert’s life. What he didn’t realize was that the ritual couldn’t be completed with a willing sacrifice, and they’d only kill him in response. Alex fed information to Molly, letting her think it was Gert’s ghost speaking instead of his, to help her bring the team to stop Chase. This delayed the Gibborim long enough that they were depleted of the power to remain even in their limbo any longer. It was an attempt to make up for his past mistakes and try to earn his way out of the hell he’d been sent to, but failed to get him any results. And so, Alex was there to greet the Gibborim as they were admitted to the place themselves, recognizing their attempts to be recognized by the gods who fathered them as mirroring his own relationship to his parents.

He remained in this state with them for an indefinite amount of time before being brought to the City.

PERSONALITY:
Alex is a plotter, planner, schemer. He thinks fast, talks fast, and expects everyone else to keep up, unless he's counting on them not being able to. As a prodigy in logic and tactics, he likes to know everything he can about a situation to best decide how to approach it. He's also practiced at leading in the field, though will resort to manipulation to make sure the team stays under his banner. He knows what to say to get people on his side, so it can be tough to tell how genuine his sincerity is at times.

He knows how smart he is too, and it has him self-assured to the point of cockiness. He knows he can handle anything if he has enough time to make a plan, or at least he seems to think so. He recognizes and respects intelligence in others, and he'll keep a close eye to determine if that's an intelligence he can use or one that will threaten him.

He can be emotionally distant and has trouble forming relationships, but is fiercely loyal to the ones he does. Before they get to that point, he'll often be impatient and sarcastic, and he's very slow to trust, keeps things close to the chest. He can operate better if he sees the people around him just as tools, less trouble using them or sacrificing them that way, but it's easier said than done. He takes himself by surprise sometimes when he realizes how much he ends up caring about people he thought were only pawns before, and he has to weigh this against the costs he's already settled on paying to see a scheme through. When he has two groups he's loyal to at cross purposes, if he can't find a compromise then he'll have to ultimately choose one. But when that happens, no matter the consequences, he'll know that was his choice, and he'll stand by it, taking the responsibility as his alone.

While he's particularly distrustful of adults, disdainful of what they've made of the world, and determined to turn it around as he can, he has a lot of issues and conflicts with how he feels about his parents. It goes back to his feelings about loyalty. Even with them gone, there's some acknowledgement and affirmation he still desires, but he's also terribly aware of this desire and where it's gotten him in the past. He's certainly not without hindsight.

POWER:
Alex’s copy of the Abstract has manifested again as he Ported in, along with its secret decoder ring. It has the following properties.
~ Having become attuned to the City, it contains information on the past, present, and future, and rewrites itself to accommodate any changes to either. I’m still figuring out how this will actually play out, and obviously he’ll need a permissions post to help that along, but if it needs to be limited to some degree, maybe it only contains information on people he’s met, over the Network or in person? let me know please
~ Among its text are some amount of magical spells, mostly ritual in nature.

[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:
Never trust anyone over thirty. Hope I die before I get old. Rebel without a cause. Whatever happened to the teenage dream?

Revolution has always been brainchild of the young, the new blood with new ideas. The ones who'll look at the world and what their 'rents have made of it and know in in their hearts, "Something is very wrong here."

We have to be proactive, but when you're running a children's crusade, you can't just go running in blind, you have to think, form a plan, know your endgame. And if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s taking the long-term into consideration, and I’m not afraid of what it’ll cost.

So, if the time calls for a little youth in revolt, then who’s ready to rock and roll?

LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
It was like someone had switched the lights off.

Might not have been complete darkness Alex suddenly found himself in, but the dim electric lights were nothing compared to the neverending brilliant white light he’d spent what must’ve been over a year in. It took a moment for his eyes to adjust and the realization to sink in. He was out. He’d finally escaped. But he had no idea what he’d done to accomplish it.

This wouldn’t do.

Something felt right about being called a hero, though. He’d always tried to be, he knew in his heart he considered himself one, but to have a third party confirm it? He wasn’t used to that. Only right to try to live up to it, and it looked like he had the Abstract again to help. As he gave it a quick flip, he noticed the cipher had changed. Something else he’d have to figure out.

The dog tags and phone seemed to be another part of this whole situation he’d been thrown into, but he wasn’t about to let them get the better of him. He’d solve this whole problem, he had no intention of being a part of someone else’s game. He’d have to make it his.

Finally stepping out to the daylight, his eyes had to adjust once more. NYC, by the looks of it. He’d have to figure out the why’s later, but blending in was higher priority, and wouldn’t be easy while he was still traipsing around in a white suit.

He’d have to think on his feet if he wanted to win this one, fall back on the old instincts. He’d have to run.
