Who: Stephen Maturin, Jack Aubrey, Elizabeth Swann, Jack Sparrow, Horatio Hornblower
When: Day 50, late afternoon
Where: The Empress
What: An update on a patient, an update on the town, and a strange compass
Rating: PG-13 for potential language, if even that

"Still asleep," Dr. Maturin reported as he entered the captain's cabin of the Empress. His presence was expected, he assumed, so he made no pretense of knocking. "He hasn't been shivering for hours, dry and warm under a few blankets." The ghost of a smile appeared on his thin features, and he bowed his head to the woman present. "I believe in another hour or two, he may be awake enough to tell us who he is."

A Naval captain, certainly. Junior post-captain, by the eplauette on his jacket. How Jack had driven into him the importance of decoration on a uniform. That, certainly, he would not forget.

"I'm afraid," he said, glancing at his old friend, "that there is more trouble on shore." He retrieved his... phone... from his pocket and set it on the captain's desk in the room. "I was listening to this earlier, and I heard talk. Some sort of... creature, it seems. Difficult to see but quite dangerous. Apparently such things are now in the town."

He would not say it, but the thought was clear in his mind. This was what he and Jack had feared. Being in this strange place, their backs to the wall... and he remained unarmed. So long as he was on the ship, of course, he hopefully had no cause to fear, but they could not stay here forever.

"I do not know if I believe much else of what I have heard about these... things... but I believe that exercising due caution would not go amiss." The remark-- the plea for consideration and restraint-- seemed mostly directed at the largest of the men: the one dressed in a captain's uniform himself.
