So yesterday we went for a planned run through the website with a bunch of other rigs. Some of who we know and other who we met for the first time. We started out meeting in bobcaygon @ 10am at the local timmy's. We ended up waiting there for an hour for a guy who was coming from Milton with a Rubicon Unlimited and had made a wrong turn. When he finally arrived we were off for the first trail out of two planned for the day. The first trial, Forrest Mountain, was a short trail but had many difficuly obstacles on it. It was a good run. After we met at a place called Flynn's corner to have a bit to eat and fix up some minor damage (bent tie rod end). We were questioning whether or not we should con't on with the second run seeing that it was already getting really late. The plan was to head into Oshawa for the RibFest that was being put on by the Oshawa Rotary Club. Well we decided to run the trail with no pit stops. Half way up we hit an obstacle called "The Bowl". It it basically a like a small miny valley that you descend on quite and angle and the go up the other side. One of our friends was spotting (when you direct the rig up the best possible route to get to the end) when the jeep that he was spotting driver slipped off the clutch and somehow was half on the break and gas. Anyways.. the jeep lunged forward very quickly slamming our friends ankle into a rock and pinning it between the bumper of the jeep and the rock. The driver backed away quickly to unpin his ankle. I instantly thought his ankle was crushed by what I had just witnessed and the scream he let out. Instantly everyone begins looking at me (the nurse). In my head I was saying shit shit shit! But something in me just went into action and started taking over. I asked my questions, got supports, water, first aid kits... etc etc. Everyone wanted to splint the ankle but I didn't cause the show and sock that were on there here holding it together enough. Plus he was in so much pain that even the ice was hurting him. I at least was able to wrap his ankle before we headed out of the trail with him in the back of our blazer. I noticed that the inner side of the ankle was bleeding like crazy so just in case I was watching for signs of a massive bleed. It was a bumpy ride out of the trail but I cushioned the foot as much as possible. The ambulance was waiting at the road when we got there. The ambulance driver stated that I did a really good job wrapping the ankle and caring for it. I never heard him say this but Buzz told me after. As a new graduate taking control of a situation like that it was the best thing I could have heard. I mean I was second quessing myself and analyzing everything that I had done. Just make me happy to know that I was able to handle the situation in the middle of nowhere and with little supplies. It could have been a lot wrose that it was but accidents do happen.
I have to say it was a little chillin when everyone was like "what are we going to do?". And the injured guy says.. "it is up to Elana, she is the nurse". I thought about it after, how someone trust you just because of a title that I have. That is huge. I am just glad that the job I did was a good one.
So we had to take our friends jeep back to their house and then everyone was still going to head down to Oshawa for ribs. One guy who was riding with us decided to wait at the end of the road instead of driving to the house and back. When we met up with him again.. he was standing behind him jeep looking depressed/tired/sad as hell. When we stopped he looked at us like he had seen a ghost. He said... "I just got a call. Billy passed away today". Again instantly my heart started racing and I jumped out of the blazer to comfort him. Billy was a friend through the site that we knew through living in Owen Sound and wheelin. He was an awesome guy who was way WAY to young to die. He was 33. I guess he had been loading up bikes after a day of dirtbiking and his Asthma caught him really bad. They were also in the middle of nowhere and he had only a puffer that didn't help. By the time help arrived.. it was too late. It is just fucking shocking... and although I wasn't as close to Billy as Jeff was (they were bestfriends who worked together).. for some reason it really impacted me. He will be a friend who is truly missed.
So in the end we called of the RibFest and headed home as things come in 3. We weren't going to take the chance. So the day came to an end. A day that I will never forget.
