i just got home from a night with joe, which was a nice end to an even nicer weekend. it was a weekend full of caring strangers, and my late grandmothers birthday, so there was warmth all around despite our obstacles.
on friday was my interview at Pratt, so i carted everything (so much skjdfsj) into brooklyn and they guy gushed over my work, and i was surprised. so was he i guess, and he called in another interviewer to check out my fashion work since she was a conceptual fashiongirl too. then she called in one of her interviewees to show her my work and how to do flats and some other things (which is a shame for the girl, since she was seeing FIT tomorrow and i know flats were 1/3 of the hometest) it was all kind of ridiculous because i didnt think too much of what i brought, but they gave it the highest portfolio score and are working on getting me a merit half scholarship. im glad i went since it made me feel better about showing to fit the next day. the campus tour didnt show us too much, but the architecture there is nice. the library is the oldest library in brooklyn, and designed by tiffanys so theres gorgeous glass and moldings. the fashion department looked really dead (thank god this was just a safety school), but the semester is just starting so maybe thats why.
we spent the night at my grandparents house... nothing too fun there, other than watching them wrinkle. my grandmother insisted on giving me a crash course in folding because i guess housewife skills are a measure of femininity that im failing? i think she was in a shell during the last half of the century. or a too-tight dress. she showed me a ton of her dresses from the early 50s (so its the new look era of big skirts-tiny waists), all in gorgeous condition with really nice details like hand-done accordion pleats , beautifully designed darts/lace/tops, and interesting collars.
after that we left for manhattan and FIT. that school has been my goal of acheivement since sixth or seventh grade, so it was kind of a big deal and i came hellllla overprepared. it was 60 kids in a big lounge, and they kept us waiting for an hour before they started the drawing test. this part was awesome, because no one could draw, and i came armed with a barrage of watercolors pens and swatches, so i got three full illustrations out of my time. everyone seemed to think i was a college student transfering. the table i was at was with interesting kids so we got to talking and it took off the stress. when my interview came it was 2 hours late, but it was so worth it. i started bringing out all of my illustrations, photos, and garments and they were really impressed. they actually took the time to see all i brought, and since one of them was costume design and one was childrenswear, my tangent garments were still appreciated. one of the other interviewers was called over to check out my upsidedown collection work from this summer and apparently it was one of the longest interviews theyve had. oops (luckily, they forgot to ask me tricky iterview questions.) they couldnt officially say i was in, but they told me and it was abundantly clear. what does scare me though is that he kept making references to me having to go study minimalist designers and classic tailoring in stores over the summer, and i wonder what that means about my design tastes at that school. if i get into all the schools i apply (pratt, fit, otis, parsons) its going to be awful to have to decide because they all have major good and bad things.
after we left fit we left for home (there was no traffic in holland tunnel, which is crazy.) and about half hour from home we got a realllly nasty flat. the tire was completely shredded at the sides. the car was shaking and there was nowhere to go since the entire shoulder on the right was snow, and to our left was 70 mph traffic. but luck was still on our side and in five minutes a state trooper pulled over and brought us somewhere safe and changed our tire for us. and as soon as he was done, our tow truck came (considering AAA is so flaky, it was miracle 267 of the weekend). we didnt need him, but he followed us all the way to our home-exit to make sure we were okay.
aaaaaand today we went out for lots of sushi. i had spicy tuna rolls, and a good time.
so everything is good right now, plus art is over so no more wangberg. so everything is even better
edit! i just got the official acceptance call from pratt. now theres no way i can mess that up (whew)
