the "nerd night"
last monday, i ended up taking a sick day from napa, which was a nice break. after playing foosball with aaron, shearin, and gobind, i get a text from cory wondering where i was, so i call him asking what was up. sounding absolutely horrible, he tells me that he would probably be the last person i'd wanna hang out with at that time. immediately heading over, i find him in his bed, crying. frustrated with the lack of direction his life was going at the present time, he was just so confused and angry at himself. climbing onto his bed, i basically told him to just do the things that made him happy, b/c at this present time, trying to aim for a big and bright future's causing him to lose the happiness he needs now. i ended up staying in his room until almost 3 in the morning, helping him go through a process of random things that were fun, falling asleep on his bed.
the next day, i checked up on the guy and he was doing better. we ended up watching some funny youtube videos, aaron came over, so we talked. cory's body language was strong, and aaron left after a while. cory helped me create a new character, armonas (legolas' not as attractive, and slightly deformed younger brother), on WoW.
thursday, he calls me up asking for some help with calculus. being rusty, i agreed to help out as much as i could. beforehand, we visited in kara's office, talking about senate and annoying people that wouldn't shut up. saw some people playing stratego, so we decided to play a couple of rounds in his room before work. i won the first round in teaching him how to play, and he won the second. we decided to keep the score even and move on. ended up staying pretty late, trying to work through calculus, even if it meant both of us had to figure out how to do the problems. ended up falling asleep again, before heading back to my dorm.
friday, scott briz and i made a tennis date, so we met up at the tennis courts, and volleyed until it closed. heading over to his room afterwards, we ended up organizing a 2vs2 battle on pokemon: scott/andrew vs john/tim. i was obviously at a disadvantage with tim just starting, so we took time to prepare. never pulled off the battle in the end.
on saturday, catching each other in the caf, i ended up bringing my computer over to his room to play some WoW. ended up playing all afternoon and into the night. not wanting to be completely lame, we tried to figure out something to do, since going to the banquet was a bust, but found out that people on campus were scarce. ended up going on an excursion to napa for food. being solely entertained by his lyricism on the way there, we get to napa, and decide to satisfy all random food cravings. bought something from in 'n out, taco bell, and mcdonalds. at taco bell, we ran into lisa hulse, who suggested that the movie "enchanted" was worth a watch. deciding to top off our "nerd night," the two of us decided to watch the movie on a whim, with me buying both our tickets to seal the deal. an over-the-top movie, if we could say so. most of the time, we had to look at each other and laugh at its ridiculousness. to extend the day, we ended up playing WoW during my desk shift, up until roughly 7:30 in the morning.
sunday was the michelle tumes concert. i received a blessing. afterwards, sonya and i teased jon garza up the wall with his childhood crush on tumes. funniest moment: when sonya was getting all her stuff signed for jeremy, and tumes commented that she had a spoiled boyfriend, so i turned to jon and said "yeah jeremy, why don't you get your stuff signed yourself?!?"
monday, i had to share the good news of the job offer. i accompanied kara and janza for their pieces. after the recital and class, i made my way back to paulin. illustrated awkward friendship hugs: shearin/stacy and john/cory. told them all the good news, then headed up to the caf to grab a bite. ended up giving a heart to heart with janer while cory gave one to trisha the rest of the night.
wednesday, i had a couple of questions to ask, along the lines of a cory/shearin/johnO/janer dinner date and the lack of drive, so i came over with my computer handy, to play some WoW in his room. didn't seem in a chatty mood so i never pushed it. we did get a lot accomplished in our game, despite the distractions of women's caroling, and horny guys wanting to get in on the action with the view. i told him that my patience was running thin, and sometimes it's just nice to take a break from people.
thursday, our dinner plans were a bust, since he wasn't feeling in an entertaining mood. after i was done with my orchestra portion, cory was sitting in the back of the church texting, apparently single-handedly distracting 7 people in choir. ended up sitting back there, fooling around and causing even more of a distraction for the others. discussed what it would take for us to rejoin choir. turns out we both need flexibility (taking it for no credit, which allows us to show up when we want) and people there that would make it worthwhile (for me, it would be sitting in the general area with ivy, kara, and cory). kara joined our rowdiness, them playing off their floozy relationship. afterwards, i head over to hang out with kara in her office for a bit, then scott calls me for our pokemon battle. tim and i ended up winning, which was surprising. good planning and discussing helped.
i went back to kara's office so she could finish her story about janer and josh's break. ended up talking in andre lobby for a while, then coincidentally ran into cory, who talked about his time spent with chelsea. megan joined us and we discussed our rio lindo band story, and roommates. megan told cory to move back to grainger quick, and cory jokes: "well, i'm trying shortly. i just need to get rid of jordan bargas." since it was pouring hard, i walked him back to his dorm room. he eloquently described a trait of both of us, saying that it's great being nice to everyone and forming a superficial and friendly bond. this allows you to have a good time with people in the course of the day. but at the end of the day, there are the select few who you develop a deeper friendship with, and they are the ones that are quality and substance to your life. i ended up staying the night on the floor, curled up with a blanket.
friday, after our christmas concert, i caught up with kara to ask about her eyepatch, then made WoW plans with cory during my desk shift. played until almost 5, then decided it was time to hit the sack.
today, i headed over to cory's room after the concert to try to pull him out of "the world," since he spent all day in bed. made plans to go broomballing, but needed to get food beforehand. since the caf was closed, we decided to drive to get food. drove through st helena, down the 29, and decided on pizza. ended up in napa, driving around streets and passed 5 potential pizza places. papa murphy's disappointed, since it was closed. "PFFT," says cory. ended up settling for mary's pizza shack and their calzones. it was quite the adventure trying to get to santa rosa from napa, taking the 29, to the 121, to the 12, to the 101. never quite made it to the 101, but enjoyed running stop signs and singing to the most eclectic radio mix. hesitated for the final directions, calling "ms mendocino" for directions. pulled crazy maneuvers in parking lots, and driving back and forth until we finally found the ice skating rink, half an hour after it started. on the way out of the car, i mentioned i needed to put "mis zapatos" on, and it started a chain of lame spanish speaking: "a pie... el FRIO!" says cory. broomballing was a blast. on the way back, we wanted to stop for ice cream. since we opted against crowding denny's like everyone else, we tried searching for a mcdonalds, which led us in crazy directions. when we gave up and decided to pull on the freeway, one flashed its shiny M on our left. curses. we decide to stop by the arco for drinks in calistoga, but our luck brought us to a closed gas stop. settled for a shell station for some water and sobe: "so be it," says john. chilled a bit in his room until deciding to turn in for the night.
it's been a good feeling being able to strengthen a quality friendship. yeah, it takes quite a bit of initiative, but i know that we're building a strong, mutual friendship here.
