the single mattress

i'm about to go picture journal here. it's been an eventful and amazing weekend. definitely tiring, but memorable.

this weekend, i played with probably one of the most fun praise bands i'll ever play with: aaron doyle on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, cory mitchell on vocals, james lee on lead guitar, joe chacon on bass, rob hodges on drums, and me on keyboards/synthesizer and vocals. all amazing musicians, all take what they do very professionally. not to mention, the most ethnically diverse group. one black guy, one mexican, one filipino, one korean, one irish, and one transparent (ha!). not to mention that we're all each a year apart in age, ranging from 17 to 22 (and yikes, i'm the oldest one).

i could write an amazingly detailed entry about it all, but i think snippets will be more entertaining for me in the future:
*pre-trip: snacking on crackers, chilling with cory and aaron, stealing corzie's sleeping bag stealthily for joe to use, and finding a way to stall for two hours.

*aaron's car dying on him, forcing me to drive, which allowed me to get to know joe better.

*having to wait until vespers to get out, giving us a late practice and having us miss dinner. stale chocolate chip muffins from creepy boys' dean didn't help either.

*finding out we had no place to stay, and that we were going to have to share one mattress, in the boys' dorm chapel.

*a late night drive to denny's, following behind cory, who missed the exit to denny's twice. rob was at a loss for words; he was that hungry. cranky james makes one hilarious ride.

^trying to figure out whether or not our waiter/waitress was a guy/girl. six of us, all around the table texting each other, sheesh.

^taking bets on how much rob's order would cost, to see who would win the mattress; rob won, only being three cents off the bill of $24.03.

*being slightly creeped out by the strung-out black transvestite who talked to herself, sitting in a table behind us.

^being excited to find out that we had TWO mattresses. james and i ended up sleeping on the couches downstairs in the dorm lobby anyways.

*having to take showers in the filthy, muddy guys' dorm showers.

^missing breakfast yet again, for early sound check and warmup.

*cory redeeming himself from last night's denny's fiasco, and getting us breakfast from his connections.

^playing for a semi-enthusiastic group of high schoolers.

*totally winging our closing song, after deciding to change it last minute, and only talking through it outside the church during the sermon. yes, we were that good. we agreed that whoever screwed it up would buy lunch; joe owes us lunch.

^lunch in the caf.

^aaron, ministering to a girl, who just wanted a hug. our band's "eye candy" got hit on twice!

^aaron getting a phone number from previously mentioned girl. her friends were being really forward, haha.

^rehearsing all afternoon for our late afternoon sets. we had to learn and play 16 songs. ended up only getting through 13.

^a quick run to a gas station/KFC/taco bell for caffeine and food.

^playing our outdoor set, and pulling it off.

^taking band shots.

*the countless times carrying james on my back, down the dorm steps.

*staying by to watch some football games. cheering hard for glendale, in front of stacy. being utterly disappointed that they lost against loma linda, even though they were winning by the first half. stupid mistakes in the second half, accompanied by bad calls. seemed like everyone BUT loma linda fans wanted glendale to win.

*getting to know joe's family life on the way back.

*completely knocking out once i got back.

definite fun times. i don't care much for the fact that it was a paid gig (they ended up throwing in an extra $200 than what they were originally going to pay. it was sweet), since band trips form great memories. fun times.

pictures, performance
