the poker night at cory's

summer seems to be going swimmingly at the moment... after an intense week of responsibility and stress for a good cause, it was nice to enjoy some moments of relaxation with different people... and the week's only half over!

monday, joseph organized a going-away hangout for kristen, since she was leaving for arkansas on tuesday... we met up at the familara's house until everyone could come... saw joyce and jamie for the first time since spring break, so i congratulated them on graduating... caught up with joyce about the wedding, and we chilled until everyone got there... joyce, justin, derek, junjun, matt, ryan, brandon, joseph and i drove over to huntington beach, which graced us with perfect beach weather... not too hot, with a nice chilling breeze, with the water at a nice temperature...

actually chose to go swimming, as opposed to the other times where i'm usually stuck watching everyone's stuff, mostly b/c i was always uncomfortable with how i looked... nope, didn't care this time, haha! talked with joyce at the shoreline about this specific time in our lives, where everything's in the air... i feel like the last years of college transitioning into the working world are the most stressful, knowing that you no longer have the comfort and luxury of security... i told her about the potential directions that life could take me, and at least i have those in mind...

kristen came eventually after our first wave of ocean enjoyment... we went back in the water, body surfed... a really intense wave caught joyce and i by surprise, slamming into us, causing me to tumble under the water... fun times... the one wave i caught while body surfing surprised me, b/c i didn't know what to do after catching the wave; what do you do, just let the wave crash you into the debris? haha... we spent about three hours at the beach before deciding to go grab dinner...

stopped by big lots on the way back, so that joyce could buy some underwear b/c she refused to go commando, haha... decided to eat at chili's... jamie and rachel met up with us there... talked with jamie about her final year of college, and her senior photography project... we caught each other up on how school's been treating us, and enjoyed our meals... surprisingly, we ended up with more money than we needed at the end, which is such an evolution from the cheapskates the guys have been in the past, haha!

decided to chill at derek's house for the night... surprised everyone with the guitar hero skills i have... sorta funny, b/c justin thought he was gonna impress me, with him rockin out on normal... everyone's pretty much getting going on normal, but junjun and i can play comfortably on hard... they came to the conclusion that when i DO play video games, that i'm surprisingly good at them, haha! talked to amy a bit on the phone as she vented, and she showed up a bit later, and we all parted ways after midnight... as little as i've hung out with them recently, it's always nice to know that there's still comfort and fun being with everyone...

yesterday, headed over to cory's house to celebrate his becoming legal... last week, he was texting me about a potential picnic that his mom wanted to throw him on his birthday that he wasn't too thrilled about, so i told him to take ownership of it and invite people that would enable him to have a good time... he invited me to stay over at his house, and we worked through the details throughout the week... the picnic idea fell through, but he still wanted me to come over, so i ended up driving over to the publishing company where he works, and from there rode with him and his dad to his house... met his dad, and on the way to his house, heard fun work stories about cory's analysis of his coworkers, as well as learning about mr mitchell's work history...

picked up food from pick up stix, then arrived at their house... had dinner with the family, whose family dynamic is hilarious, haha! decided that cory's a lot like his mom, and that cameron's definitely like their dad... they pretty much let him get away with everything since it was his birthday, and it was obvious that the guy was excited to be legal, as that was his excuse for everything, haha! saw some embarrassing family pictures and played some piano as they all told me about their sabbath ritual, and watched cory open his presents and cards... the random sleepover evolved into a guy's poker night, so we played some guitar hero until some of cory's other friends came over... met brent, bryan lane, adam, and tim, and mrs mitchell put me in charge of calling her when the cinnamon rolls were ready, since she already trusted me more than cory and cameron, haha...

$5 buy-in for our game... i've played texas hold 'em several times with the GFCrew, but it's been a while, and i've never actually played for real... with all that aside, i actually lasted pretty long, considering that tim, the one guy that had NO idea how to play, ended up having an amazing streak of beginner's luck, getting a lot of his winning hands on the river... sheesh... it was ridiculous, b/c tim actually ended up winning the game in the end, which was utterly disgusting to all of us... i was the third out, out of six... jumped on the trampoline outside, did the asian thing and washed their dishes which surprised cameron, who said that i did more chores at their house than cory did in an entire year, haha... witnessed a pathetic display of a fizzing martinelli's decorking celebration outside, watched adam and bryan's amazing and almost disgusting skills at guitar hero, and listened to cory and bryan catching up and going through an old newbury directory, seeing where everyone ended up...

everyone headed out, so we started winding down... gave cory his gift, played some DS, and became our closet nerd selves again, haha... stayed up pretty late, considering he had to get up pretty early to get to work the next day... stayed in his room for the night... early morning in the mitchell house, considering that half my family's not up until almost noon, haha! definitely not a morning person... had some breakfast, dropped cameron off at their grandparents', heard a little history about camarillo's development, and they dropped me off at my car to head home... definite fun times...

today, watched kill bill: vol 2 with the brothers at auntie chuchie's house... drove with joseph on the way, and had some deep discussion about the choices we make, and about friendships... i enjoy finding common ground with my brothers, when we all claim to be totally different people... as different as our lifestyles and paths of life are, certain values and principles we hold are very identical... discovering what those are make our family dynamic great...

going paint-balling for the first time tomorrow! going with the youth group... should be fun!

friends, family
