'Public' spaces should be open to more than just paid advertising, given that if it's paid then it's not really public, but rather only open to those that can afford it. What can be more 'democratic' in a radical way than to intervene, comment, and subvert what consumer capitalism tries to feed us? Contrast this with a vision of the market as neutral and democracy as a form of organization that must not mess with the market... Efforts to restrict/criminalize graffiti are usually associated with conservative 'law&order' movements. Not to make too much of graffiti, but in light of the recent Supreme Court ruling I can only wish someone comes up with a graffiti equivalent for political campaigns!
