I'm stuck in the computer lab waiting for my friend to give me notes sooo...indignant anger time!!!
It's probably because I'm so stressed out but I get really angry and easily offended by stuff right now. And no, it's not about Breton's lj drama. It's time to let that whole subject die. More like issues that piss me off. To start with, PETA. I thought they were a great group when I was younger but the more I learn, the less I agree with them. I mean "total animal liberation"??? Alot of animals have been domesticated for hundreds and hundreds of years and it's really in their best interest to continue. I think my cats lead a much better life with me then they would if they lived on the street. They're provided for and cared for and generally lead a very relaxed life. And I think everyone agrees that animals should be handled ethically. But really it's in our nature to eat other animals. It's what animals do! They eat eachother! And as long as the meat I eat has suffered the least possible, I am very happy.
PETA just really takes the whole thing too far. They picket humane shelters and say that the people keep animals in cages (ummm yeah? obviously?) and that they murder animals. I don't like cats and dogs being put down but I recognize that a shelter can only do so much and if an animal is sick to the point where care is unrealistically expensive and time consuming, putting them down is what's best. It's not murder, it's not done inhumanely, it's just the best an overburdened system can do.
And the videos of animal abuse these people put out? Such propaganda. I agree that they show horrible things and that wearing fur is just stupid but I have never heard of an actual reputable slaughter house killing cows like that. I know there are places were it happens but I would highly doubt that they're in Canada. I know they released a video from northern Quebec showing a foie gras farm where a "wroker" was abusing the ducks and you know what it was? They paid a 12 year old kid to kick the ducks on film. It wasn't a worker, it was a set up.
These people just don't realize how much we rely on animals. They provide food, they create medicines... I know I don't like testing on monkeys and it's not something I could do but I realize that we have learned a lot from the tests done. I don't particularly like watching my co-worker kill mice but I know that a lot of important research from mice has increased the understanding of science by massive leaps.
And PETA supports a guy who gave a talk to kids about building molotov cocktails! And then encouraged the kids to throw them at research facilities.
If you're so pro animal it's a much safer bet to help locally. Give money to the SPCA's. They need it. Volunteer there. Most places I've seen are severely understaffed. Help foster the animals. Adopt the animals. There's just so many better options that PETA or the AFU.
I really just despise these people that look down on you because you eat meat. If you don't eat meat because of your own choices I understand. I mean I don't like eating rabbits because they're cute. But I don't rail on the people who do. I don't go around saying "Oh, you should never eat rabbit. That's so cruel. You're a horrible person if you eat rabbit." If the animal was raised properly, if it was killed humanely, then you know what? I'll probably eat it.
