Curiouser and curiouser
I have had a few learning experiences this week.
1) I was right not to buy wearable things online before. I broke that promise for a couple pieces of jewelry last week. Bad idea. They looked much better online than they do in person, I would never have bought them had I seen them live. The upside is, I need gifts to take to Russia (I am leaving Saturday!) and these will do nicely for that purpose.
2) I thought there is a limit to how weird a competition can get, but I were wrong. I have just received an ad today advertising this: Air Sex World Championship. Which is actually taking place in New York City on my birthday, of all days. And this is the description: "What, you've never heard of air sex? It's like air guitar, but instead of rocking out with an imaginary guitar, competitors will be making love to an imaginary partner."
3) It helps to think before acting, even when I have steam coming out of my ears. Saves on having to apologize later on. I was so irritated with one vendor after having spent hours and hours doing beta-testing work they should have done themselves (and I can no longer trust them to do anything themselves!) that when I got a report of problems with another vendor I sent a rather sharp e-mail. Then I further investigated the issue, realized I was wrong and sent an apology.
4) Sometimes, it does require sharp language, though, if people think that being nice and polite is a sign of weakness. If someone needs to have their sorry ass shredded to bits, I can do it. I don't necessarily want to, but I can do it.
5) Rent is usually negotiable. I am still getting an increase, but half of what they originally wanted. It's still expensive to live here, but it is simply a very expensive part of the country. Having looked at what else is out there, though, I think I am getting a decent deal.

6) I used one of my favorite analogies to explain logic sequences that only go one way: "All enzymes are proteins, but not all proteins are enzymes." I got stares and "That's way too scientific for me." from a couple colleagues. Do normal people not make analogies like that?
