Victory so bitter that it will taste like defeat.

For those of you not familiar with the term "Pyrrhic Victory"

Pyrrhic victory is a victory that inflicts such a devastating toll on the victor that it is tantamount to defeat.

Some of you may feel that there is a victory somewhere down the line with the prosecution Trump's criminal associates, and perhaps with him, via impeachment or what not. The wheels of justice appear to be working so far, against those it can touch (not a sitting president). Nevertheless, even if Trump is impeached and removed from office, while we've won, we've also lost.

The population that still supports Trump hasn't been, is not now, and will not be swayed by criminal prosecutions, indictments, admissions of guilt, or anything from Trump associates; somehow he's free from all mortal legal moral bindings in this country...just so long as he appears to be doing the bidding of those who support him (fun fact, he's not, it's all an illusion filled with bombastic lies and deceptions, but most of you reading this will know that).

This is all mostly thanks to the right wing wackadoodle words that started to be seriously broadcast in the 1990's; Rush Limbaugh being one of the first (gaining significant traction) and continual sources of auditory sewage broadcasting over the airwaves. We then have a whole host of AM radio hatemongers and then it was all joined by Fox News, who took it to a level that Joseph Goebbels would have admired. All this set the stage for why Donald Trump was elected. If there wasn't a fear of the "others" immigrants, minorities, people with different ideas, we'd never have elected this...person.

Even if we defeat Trump, assuming the Democrats take the House and can at least impeach him, and perhaps remove him and his entire cabinet, VP and all (there are ways this could happen) - then we sound our victory cheer, HUZZAH! ...right? Not so fast. We might have  dealt with the symptom, but not dealt with the underlying cause, and those people are going to be even more fearful, hateful, and perhaps even vengeful of what they will undoubtedly see as some "Democrat deep state conspiracy" - That's not to say we shouldn't do everything we can to prosecute Trump and his croneys, of course we have to do this.

The next leadership in the White House is going to face an incredibly fractured society, something we haven't seen since the late 1960's. The lack of civility, different ideas, 1st amendment protections, and on and on is a cancer upon this country, one that divides us down to friends and family. The GOP has become a group of spineless shit-licking sycophants, crippled by a madman with a Twitter account. The old guard is lying belly up or leaving, and Trumppets (Trump Puppets) report to Congress held in fear of the man and wonder if this is all worth it. The Democrats, stupidly put Hillary on the ticket and can't even get united on messaging in this presidency, which is pathetic. The left fights fragmentation from moderates to new-age socialists, and while ideas are wonderful, they really need to find some common messaging and present a more united front.

We are a waning power, made so even more quickly by Trumps bluster and incompetence in  understanding global trade and how basic economics works. On one hand there are white supremacists out in the open and marching around with tiki torches, and on the other, the desire for safe spaces and banning people from speaking at colleges and universities (previously bastions of free thought and free speech).

Large portions of the country hate other large portions of the country and vice-versa, and civility and rational discourse is in its death throes. This is where we've lost already and defeating Trump will only make things worse for those divides. I have some hope that we can reason with some on the left that don't like hearing difficult speech and desiring it banned on college campuses; not a ton, but a little. On the other hand, I don't know how to defeat the willful ignorance of Trump supporters, at all.

All of this is why we've already lost and continue to lose, but we must go on, going on and fighting for truth, justice, civility, the Constitution, and so on, otherwise our potential future Pyrrhic victories will be permanent defeats, like the Romans and the final battle of Carthage, where the city was completely obliterated and the surrounding lands salted so nothing would grow in those soils for a very long time.
