Summary: If he was mean to show his love, why was she so cruel to him?
She did her job and she did it well. It wasn't just that she could sneak up on any target without them knowing, her gait light and easy and without a sound when she wished it. It wasn't the way she could blend into a crowd, suddenly disappearing as if she'd never been there and yet, if you turned your head just right, there she was. It was that everything she did was done with the exact purposefulness as if her life was on the line.
Which, of course, it was.
That didn't stop Juggernaut from worrying about everything she did. She was small and delicate. Not that he would ever tell her that to her face. Last thing he needed was her coming at him all rage and nails and demanding he take it back. Which she was likely to do if she knew he took his job more seriously than life or death. It was about wanting to make sure she lived through all they were forced to do. Wanting to make sure she was okay and yet knowing that if he tried to help her, she would likely be meaner to him than even those they answered to would be.
Why you gotta be so mean to me
Why you gotta drag me down just to make me see
You know I don't listen good and I'm always in need
So why you gotta be so mean to me
She moved so easily, the steel Russian not even realizing she'd touched him, his stolen memories unnoticed. Still Juggernaut didn't move, waiting until Rogue was back by his side, moving past him as she headed to a more secure location. She called in, her voice soft but that lilting accent reached his ears nonetheless and Cain flinched. He'd seen the last time they'd broken her limbs, leaving her laying in her cot with arms akimbo and her legs twisted and yet making not a sound after that initial wailing. Wailing that still echoed in his ears even now. There's an empty place inside that is hurting me. Cain had smoothed her limbs, set them as best he could. It's a place where words are spoken you will never hear. He'd done it coolly, methodically while cursing her that she was risking the next mission with her silly wounds. Silly wounds he'd called it when a teenage girl had lain before him without a whimper, all for limbs broken for the sport and amusement of those that owned them, body and soul. A place that keeps my heart out on its own. A disconnected function of my wretchedness . That keeps me so hard pressed .
Following her, dogging her steps like a leashed puppy, Juggernaut looked around slowly, assuring they were alone. A crowd of faceless strangers moving on. A feeling that you left it all behind you now; that it doesn't hurt somehow. "Don't scream this time,' he hisses to her under his breath. "Don't give them the satisfaction."
He was expecting the attack, the careless, cruel words flung at him. Verbal barbs that wedged themselves into his heart, bringing his head lower and lower with every new attack, her words insulting his heritage, his manners and his manhood.
Why you gotta be so mean to me
Why you gotta drag me down just to make me see
You know I don't listen good and I'm always in need
So why you gotta be so mean to me
By the time she was done, Juggernaut couldn't feel any lower, wondering if she would turn him in so that he'd be turned over to Sabertooth as she so often was. He never asked what happened in those sessions, just letting her attack him physically when she returned, the mutant's animalistic nature often too much for her to handle. But when she turned, he followed her without a word, head down and his eyes on the heels of her boots. Not noticing anyone around them, not even the scruffy, curly haired man in the trenchcoat that had watched it all. A man with red eyes that laughed as he watched the big man and his petite companion make their way back to their transportation. A man that dogged her steps just as much as the Juggernaut did and yet was much better at hiding his obsession with the dangerous southern mutant.
