underwater blues
i got a taste of scuba diving when we went to el nido 3 weeks ago. 10 minutes underwater, 4 meters deep.
when i got back home, that was it. i knew i had to take lessons. it's just one of those things that you know you have to do, like the time i knew i had to learn the guitar, or the summer i knew i had to try out acrylics. i know scuba diving's waiting for meee.
the problem? i researched dive schools online, sent emails, and got a sad response. the total cost for lessons, including equipment, is 12500. thefuck. fine fine.. i should've expected it. i mean it's a bit pricey, but i could tell my parents i'd shoulder like half of that with my stipends. but later on, i find out that you HAVE to attend 4 open water dives. . . as in out there. in the open. as in out of metro manila. overnight. with random juanas as my parents would put it. that's pretty much an additional 5000.
fat chance of me ever getting allowed! i ran the idea by mom anyway, and to my surprise, she mentioned that her cousin (who's 30+ years old mind you) also wanted to take lessons BUT her parents didn't allow her either. GREATNESS. so fine. i flushed my scuba diving dreams down the drain and gave myself more reason to push myself harder to study so one day i'd get a six-figure-paying job, rent out my own flat, and take scuba diving lessons with my own money and without need for parental consent.
fast forward to the first day of summer classes. i meet andy, joe's best friend. i ask andy where joe is. "she's taking scuba diving for PE." WTF??????????????????????? they offer it at UP????
i can't believe i missed that. how could i have NOT seen it on crs? how ? how???? was it there from the start?? or was it added later on pa? aughhhhhhhh can somebody say stupid? BLIND? oh my username so befits me.
(oh wait, helenkeller was deaf and mute, not blind pala whoops.)
UP offers the course for 2800 fucking pesos lang. WITH EQUIPMENT. plus an additional 7000 for open water dives, which already includes resort accommodations and boat rentals. if i'd known joe were taking, i'd be off to my happy scuba diving place right now. plus, i could tell my parents that the final 4 out-of-town dives are required!!!!!!!!
