NT Greek jokes

Jun 10, 2007 14:09

You know you go to a geeky church when our interim rector makes this joke in his sermon:
When I came here in August I expect you to have found a rector in four months. I planned for Christmas for myself, made a worship booklet for Epiphany and set up Lent services to help your new rector have an easier start here. But I certainly expected your new rector to be planning Easter by his or her self.
Now it's Penetacost, and you've finally interviewed a candidate. I'm glad you guys are working with kairos time instead of chronos time, but I wish God would hurry it up a little. I retired 5 years ago, and I'd like to go fishing sometime.

Explanations:
1. How it came up: He preached in his sermon that Matthias wasn't actually the 12th (/13th) Apostle, but that Paul was, and Matthias was only chosen b/c the desciples were living in chronos, not kairos, time.
2. Chronos vs. Kairos: More complicated. Choros is choronological, calender/clock type time. Kairos is "God's time", or the best moment or opportunity.
